Just out of interest Roger1 how do you expect a hotel to charge for extras after checkout without the CVV code if it is required for card not present transactions? Yes, they could run it through as a card present transaction and pretend you signed the receipt but surely this option is even worse than not entering the CVV code?
Amazon manage - I think they essentially have to accept the risk of you contesting the transaction. If the retailer has the CVV, its harder for the CC company to claw the cash back later.

This again largely comes down to the retailer's agreement with their merchant provider.

CVV checking is something which actually costs extra for retailers, in most cases they will have to pay their merchant provider a tiny bit more per transaction to have the transaction CVV checked, on the understanding that it thereby reduces fraud and the merchant's liability for it.
In Amazon's case, they basically decided many years ago that their own anti-fraud checking was good enough, and that covering the cost of any extra fraud from not checking CVV was cheaper than paying more for every card payment to check it.

The PCI DSS standards are about how the merchant stores and handles card data too - not just what is it that they keep. Many online shops use third party data processors (such as Sage Pay and Worldly) and as such they never see any of the card data.

Certain merchants are allowed to claim for items that come to light after departure. Ones that come to mind are hotels and car rental companies.

There's an implied condition when you hand your card over that they can do this. It was explained to me once by my bank.

Of course, it means that you need to check card statements carefully, A couple of times I've challenged such charges from car rental companies when they didn't tell me what the charges were for.

    Really?

In 10 years of call centre work I never worked in a single one where listening to your recorded calls wasnt standard process and so it'd become fairly evident quickly when you notice there is a bit missing from every sales call you listen to.

Latest Witness Client software will auto redact any card details or numbers from call recordings, by playing white noise over the top.

Working in the financial industry and managing call centres and there technology for 10 years, I can categorically state that is possible to do this, with no interaction from the agent handling the call.

Clearly this depends on the IVR, ACD and recording software and the business. All 3 businesses i have worked for over the 10yrs+, have and do use this technology.

Also it might be "common practice" to store these numbers along with PAN and Account sort code numbers, but without major encryption or randomisation of numbers/characters, this is certainly not "Best practice".

As per other comments, the blocking of the recording of card details is automatic on modern call recording systems - you can't trust the staff to remember to press the button!
