PPI success but need advice

I found some old paperwork from Lloyd Tsb so rang them to check whether any loans had PPI on them. They sent me 2 claim forms which I completed as best I could as the loans where 18 years old! Anyway to cut a long story short they were both up held however I received 2 cheques - one in my name and one in joint names with my ex husband, which I had not even realised was a joint policy.
The problem is my ex husband has since deceased after our divorce so where do I stand with getting what I am entitled to? I only know my ex died via a distant friend so no contact with his family.
After speaking to Lloyd's they require a death certificate and probate - can they do this or are they being awkward? I

Lloyds will require what they have asked for, you could tell them the situation, send the cheque back if they agree, and ask for a cheque for your half to be made payable to you.0

Thanks for the reply Amersall.
I did try to ask for the cheque to be reissued for my half but the person I was talking to didn't really have a clue and had to keep putting me on hold while they checked with someone! I am not really happy to get death certificates etc as 1) not sure of details to obtain one and 2) surely it has nothing to do with my half which I am entitled to?
If Lloyd's don't agree to reissuing the cheque could I take this to FOS?
Sorry for extra questions!0 -

Put it in writing not just phone call, that way you can explain it clearly and the bank can pass it onto somehow who understands rather than trying to do it over the phone. You might need to contact the ex's family to explain they are owed some cash but you need their co-operation e.g. for the death certificateSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
