Extra Energy Price Increase On Fixed Contract?
Options
Just noticed that Extra Energy have increased my unit rate and standing charge from the 9th March due to portal improvements and VAT. I thought that being on a fixed term contract that the price would remain the same for the period of the contract? Can they do this?

I do not think they have increased the prices. What they are doing is now showing the price inclusive of VAT whereas before it was ex VAt and they added VAT on at the bottom of the bill.
Are the prices quoted 5% higher than the previous ones?0 -
Because I am paying direct debit I dont not have a bill to compare any price increases. What is a "portal improvement"? and why were previous bills exempt from the 5% vat rate?0

No but you still get a regular statement if on DD, and that quotes the ex VAT rates, and then adds VAT to give the total. Previous bills were not exempt from VAT, unless their billing system has a major issue.
Portal = website.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
you don't get any kind of DD statement from them at all & you'll be very lucky to get a bill as their billing system DOES have a major issue, they can't issue any bills! please see latest posts on this long running thread for info.0

Portal = website.
There's no regular DD statement like others have also experienced, so there's no way of checking the rates of these price increases.
The price increase of the portal (website) is surely questionable when on a fixed contract?0 -
They haven't changed the price they charge you at all. They're just changing how they display the price to you.
Previously they worked out your standing charge and consumption excluding vat then added the 5% vat on at the end.
Now they've included the 5% VAT in the standing charge and unit prices so they don't have to add 5% VAT on at the end.
You will still pay exactly the same as you would have paid before.
if you look up your tariff on energyhelpline you should see that the prices you see on the extraenergy website are exactly the same as those displayed on energyhelpline.0 -
The prices have not increased. The web "portal" used to show the prices excluding VAT, it now shows the prices including VAT. Mine used to show 22.47p per day and 11.48p per kWh. 22.47 * 1.05 = 23.594, 11.48 * 1.05 = 12.054. These are the prices it now shows. The amount you pay is no different. When they bill you they will show the "old" prices and add 5% at the end.0
