Alternatively - buy a printer so you'll be able to use it at home - when ever you like.

    Good point.

For a small amount of printing, a cheap laser would be ideal.

Something like THIS for (£50 from Rymans) would be ideal.

Hardly seems a good trade-off: working longer hours just to get a few sheets printed free..

Some days work 06:00 to 14:00 or 13:00 to 21:00. Plenty of scope to have the place to my self.

If you can't bring yourself to ask, can you "bury" it amongst another multi-page printout? Insert it as page 5 of a 15 page document or something? I did this a few times with vouchers I wanted to print. Definitely wouldn't do it with anything controversial though. I don't think my boss would actually have minded if he saw I'd printed out a couple of vouchers, but if I was printing out a CV or something employment related, he'd (rightfully) have been cross.

We also gained a new head of IT, and I know he monitored email, as well as printer usage. Not sure if that extended to monitoring what we printed, but I wouldn't risk it after that.

Pick up a cheap printer if you can - much safer.

Why's that? I have the place to myself most days where I work, as I'm usually here half an hour before everyone else.

I sometimes print stuff on the work printer, but only if I need it for that evening and have forgotten to bring the printout I made at home with me. That would be my homework for my evening class which I go to straight from the office, so not anything that I would mind my employer reading. Not that anyone else could read it, as it wouldn't be in English ;) . We don't have an official IT / data / telecoms policy. The one stated to me when I joined was "please restrict long distance personal phone calls to the afternoon when it's cheaper" and it hasn't been updated since. The unwritten one is "don't take the p..."

Printing personal documents in the office without permission is almost certainly a breach of your IT security policy. Which in most companies could lead to disciplinary action.

The fact that you're planning on doing it early/late when no-one else is around suggests you know what you're doing is against the rules and you're trying to avoid getting caught.

Your IT team will have access to the entire content of the document, including filename, matched to your computer/login. There's also a good chance that the document will remain stored on the printer and/or print server's hard drive.

If you think that's worth a saving of £50 or so on buying your own printer, then go for it ;)

If you think it's monitored and you don't want them to see it, use the library or ask a friend.

If you are sure it's just the file name that's monitored & you can definitely get to the printer to be there when it actually prints, re-name your file something boring like "invoice" or "monthly_stats" (something you'd usually print) & print that along with something genuine.

Although it probably will be breaking untold number of policies if your company IT has time to monitor individual prints then either there is too many of them or they need to work on more sensible things.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
