American Airlines but booked through Finnair

Flight from NY to Manchester was cancelled due to a mechanical fault resulting in a 36 hour delay. I have looked at all the information regarding compensation due to EU rule 261/2004. I understand that under this rule I am not entitled to compensation because it was not an EU airline travelling into the UK. However, the flight was booked with Finnair with a Finnair flight number and ( in fact I was unaware that it was a n AA flight until we went on the outbound flight) I wast wondering if this would make any difference to a compensation claim. I hold out very little hope but does anyone know for certain what the ruling is on this? Any clarification greatly appreciated.

No it's the carrier you travel on NOT the code share flight number that counts - SorryI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Duchy is correct. The fact that you booked through Finnair, and "didn't know" it was American isn't relevant. Somewhere in your travel documentation it will have told you "operated by American Airlines" well before you got to your outbound flight.0

For futute - on the Finnair website where you see the list of flight options to search from, next to the AY MAN-NYC flight it states "Operated by American Airlines"However, the flight was booked with Finnair with a Finnair flight number and ( in fact I was unaware that it was a n AA flight until we went on the outbound flight)
Codeshares are not uncommon these days and the airlines do show the "operated by" carrier0
