what do estate agents prefer?

Out of selling a property and taking a one off fee or managing a rental property and having an ongoing profit for doing so?

I think you are getting confused. An 'estate agent' typically sells houses (for a one off fee). 'Letting agents' are involved with the letting of homes on behalf of landlords. Some will just find a tenant, while others find tenants and undertake the routine management.

Some estate agents also undertake lettings as well.

Its not a case of 'what do they prefer?' Its more a case of which market they are in. Some business models have an erratic yet high income stream (estate agents)' while some have a regularised steady income stream (letting agents)

I would think selling is easier money, but it probably depends on the individual; most individual agents work in either sales or lettings not both. This will influence their preference.

It's a fair question since some landlords will think about selling a rental and some sellers might consider renting it out. I think the OPs question is whether you think an EA will be biased and try to lean a vendor towards one particular option.
Personally I think most EAs that deal in both sales and letting tend to have two different sets of staff, so which they prefer depends on who you talk to. The sales staff would push sales and the lettings would want to let it out. They might not even have the same person in charge of the branch for both sides.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
