I too need to consider wooden flooring for my lounge and hall.

    What exactly does floating mean?

Floating floor is a term used to describe a type of flooring that doesn't need to be fixed to the surface below. Generally most laminates and engineered flooring fall under this. But you would need to follow the manufacturers guidelines for instructions on how to fit.

OP, as you have a concrete base the underlay will need to have a vapour barrier built in to protect the flooring.
