need compact fast growing tree for gap on wall

our garden is quite short and has a wall at the far end. this looks out onto neighbours back gardens. The neighbour on the other side of the end wall has wavy trellis and recently removed the shrub growing along it so that we can see over the low point and beyond to neighbouring gardens where another neighbour has just had 2 trees removed. Result is we now look out onto an unsightly extension. Need a compact fast growing tree to plant in the space. Suggestions please?

Fast growing trees aren't usually compact. Would a large shrub do?

How about something that you could coppice, like hazel or eucalyptus? Depends how high and for how often. Alternatively, an apple/pear would be good as something that would take hard-pruning, is reasonably open, looks nice and gives you fruit too.

Cotoneaster cornubia will grow into a tree if you let it, but it will also work as a clipped large shrub, though you will miss some of the berries.

It leafs-up quickly in spring. Where I used to live, my full size tree usually held onto its leaves in winter. So did my Dad's, though his was pruned into a shape like a lollipop and only stood around 10' high.
