Fridge Freezer making strange noise

Options
Our 3 year old Hotpoint fridge freezer has started to make weird noises when the compressor STOPS - it is like a "wheeze"
We have a Hotpoint engineer coming next week to sort it - but they only give a 30 day warranty on repairs at a cost of £119 parts and labour !!
What is it likely to be that has gone wrong with it ?

  • Dunno know what's wrong with yours, but our freezer only has been making weird noises for 3 years, since we inherited it in a house move, it is 13 years old, any visitors make the same remarks about the noise it makes. It keeps on going so we ignore it.
The cost to repair yours is about a 25% to 35% of a new fridge freezer. Maybe just think of a new one or just ignore noise, sorry wish I could help more.

My how times changed since the Italians took over! We used to charge £75 parts & labour with a year guarantee on the appliance, not just the repair.

Be prepared for the first generalist engineer to say he can't fix it & needs to get a specialist in. Personally I'd live with it, fridges make strange noises.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

At that price I'd live with the noise .... and if/when it finally goes PFFT put that money towards buying a new one. It'll probably puff along for 20 years yet.

It seems that we called the wrong number - we called Currys, who we bought the appliance from - they called out Hotpoint - had we gone straight to Hotpoint, we would have been given a 12 month guarantee on any repairs (Currys only offer 30 days) !
  • We bought a Hotpoint from Curry's just over 2 years ago, now stays on, doesn't cool down enough, noisy, absolute shambles for 2 year old unit.

Curry's gave us the same option, £119, told them no thanks. Price of a new one isn't much more, that is the route we have taken, Hotpoint...never again.

Turns out to have been ice build up on the cooling element and fan - thawed using a steamer !!
