Travel Agent trying to overcharge tax

Hello,
Last year I booked a flight with a travel agency, as the return flight was not yet available to book, the agency let me book a return in August and agreed with the airline that I can change my return free of charge. They did warn me that there could be a fare and tax increase on my change dates. Today, they quoted me an £85 increase in tax (this would be a 50% tax rise), from my experience in the industry, I know that this is incorrect and impossible. I did some research online and have confirmed that taxes have not been increased. My question is, is it illegal to overquote and overcharge airline taxes?
Many thanks

airlines include many elements under the banner "taxes" one of these, and normally the largest, is YQ know as "airline surcharge" or "fuel surcharge"
If you know the tax breakdown of the initial flights you booked, you can you onto ITA Matrix and enter details for the new journey (should not need dates) and you will see a breakdown of the taxes that are applicable that you can compare....it may be an error but only once you collect the evidence will you be able to challenge as it is not "impossible"0
