My insurance company will insure my son on my car for, say, a week at time with a maximum number of weeks per year, can't remember how many.

That would be a Temporary Additional Driver (TAD).

In most cases there is a limit to how long you can add them in one go (4 weeks is fairly common) but nothing to stop you readding them immediately after.

The downside with TADs is that you normally have to pay an admin fee on top of any additional premium each time you do it. So depending on the risk rating of the driver it can be more expensive to add them as a TAD, especially more than once, than having them as a permanent ND
