Bensons for Beds mattress Equivalent

we went to Bensons for Bed, not really with the intention of buying a bed from them but because we were in the same retail park and needed a new bed & mattress so thought we might see what kind of mattress we wanted (hubby wanted memory foam, i did't!)

They had this machine attached to a bed which we laid down on, they changed the firmness of the mattress to get the right type for our pressure points and asked us loads of questions. He recommended against memory foam straight away as we both said we sleep hot (we get super hot in the night) and he said this would be no good as they are a hot mattress, but he would let us lie on some anyway.

He then took us round the store asking us to lie on lots of mattresses and give them an out of 10 score - un surprisingly the memory foam ones scored lowest (yey for me!) and the one we liked best was the one nearly identical to the one linked below. It was 1600 or 1700 pocket springs & pillow top and was a medium firmness, it felt comfy at the time.

I didn't want to buy from Bensons for various reasons, the sales man was pushy at the end, google doesn't throw up good reviews to their own mattresses and customer services & the one he was trying to sell us looks like it is their own brand, also he was "offering" it at £899 when clearly I can buy a slightly higher spring count version online for £200 less!

Now I don't mind spending £699 on a mattress (That's probably the max budget really) I don't want to spend it on one that will sag or is not the best value for money - do I even need a pillow top, I don't know, he reckoned that you need to buy a built in pillow top one as the separate toppers never fit properly & are rubbish.....truth? Sale technique?

Also I want a high bed (we love the high american style ones when we go there) so need a deeper mattress, have seen ones at 32-36cm but not sure if the extra deepness from 25-28cm I see makes a difference to the quality of the mattress....better / worse etc?

So what I am after is a direct competitor to the above - so King Size, Coil Sprung (1500+ springs) with a possible mattress topper and possibly 30+cm in depth.......

any advice / recommendations?

thanks guys

I tried this bed but the firmer 2800 version, it was fab, thanks for the recommendation bella73!!:j

My local branch of carpetright (thornton heath) are doing an additional 10% off all sale prices as a mse special. The manager there is Ross, deal lasts till end of Tuesday.

Ross was amazing, he sorted me out i think, total price including mattress divan set, headboard, delivery, disposal of old mattress & silentnight memory foam pillow was £860.

I have 24hrs to change my mind, so if anyone can find a better deal please let me know asap!;)

No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • I’m thinking replacing my old mattress. Do you have tips for beds or mattresses? Sleeping while sitting feels better for me than lying down when having a migraine. But it’s not comfortable. Any tips? What about Adjustable Bed? One of my friends suggested me lifestyle bed by CT mattress where the bed position can be arranged according to our convenience. Anyone have other suggestions? Thank you.

I'd suggest you start your own thread as your needs are very specific and don't relate to the Op.

    Year on:
Mattress already been replaced once as it was not coming back up properly. Alarm bells should have rung, when the delivery man said they've replaced slot of these!!. 2nd mattress doing the same thing, but causing terrible back pain.
Whilst away for a week, the bed has time to resettle - nope, still terrible back ache & flattening of the mattress.
Having an 'impartial' investigation from Fira next week. Let's see how that goes :(
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • DEPOSIT RIP OFF SCAM

Please measure the access to your bedroom as Bensons don't tell you this when you order your bed, if the mattress or bed doesn't fit up the stairs and has to be returned you will lose your deposit or 20% of the order value. Even if you go back to the shop and choose a different product.

The driver who delivered my mattress said they had 4 failed deliveries that morning. It was only 11.30!

They appear to make more money from keeping customers deposits than they do selling beds.

    BEWARE!!!!
  • We purchased a Sealy Posturepedic mattress and divan base through Bensons for Beds just over three years ago, at a cost of £950.

We bought it specifically because we have bad backs (I have osteoarthritis and my husband has sciatica), however we are now at the point where we can't sleep together as my husband's back is worse when he sleeps on the "specialist" mattress we spent so much money on. And I can't walk properly and it takes me hours to get comfortable in order to actually sleep.

Sealy give a 10 year guarantee and Benson's give a 5 year guarantee, and they sent a FIRA technician round to check it. It shows wear and tear, but within their acceptable standards. However I have a Silent Night mattress, which is 6 years old, was £300, and is showing no dips or strains! Go figure!

They've said I can pay another company for an independent review, which they'll refund should their report be different to FIRA's however, we just really upset that a mattress that cost £800 is already showing signs of wear and that was bought for a specific reason (bad problems) is actually having a detrimental effect on our lives!

Sealy will not do anything because we bought through Benson's.

Any advice would be gratefully received!
