Now bankrupt & no bank account!

Hi,
I'm posting this on behalf of my mother in law who has just been declared bankrupt.

She currently has no bank account and cant seem to open one!

I'm aware that Barclays basic account is the only option, but even they have declined her!!!

What are her options as she has back dated disability allowances and wages waiting to be paid in??

Many thanks

Why did they decline her? Did they definitely do the application for the basic one? Branch staff do not always do the right one, even when you specifically ask for the basic account,

    Hi Fermi,
They won't say, the branch staff just said it's been passed to the fraud department and it's been declined?!

So, are there any alternatives if Barclays still say no?

Some. None ideal, but think there are some. Saw a list posted the other day, but can't find it right this sec. Credit unions, card accounts, accounts with a monthly fee etc.

FFrees is probably the best option then, they charge for cash withdrawls unless you pay a monthly fee to upgrade your account.

They don't currently do direct debits, but it's something they are planning on adding. You get internet banking, debit card and can do standing orders.

Neither of those will give an account to someone who is currently bankrupt.

If you have to go for a paid for account then Cashplus is a good option.

Has she checked credit reports and National Hunter?

Are you aware of anything that might be being flagged?

  • She can get her disability paid into a basic Post Office Account. If she rings the DWP and asks for a Post Office account they will send the forms. When filled they need to be taken to a Post Office with the ID requested. These are then sent on by them and a letter will arrive stating that you can open an account. Then the pin number arrives and if you take the letters, your pin number and ID to a Post Office they will activate the account and they will inform the government agencies to pay her money into the account. Then a card will arrive to be able to draw money.

I now have the letter and pin and awaiting an appointment at Barclays for Thursday and if they refuse me will go immediately to the Post Office and open that. Not ideal as you can only have cash and no other monies can be deposited into it other than government money, but it is a start and at least she will get her DLA.

    Good Luck.
