I did't think any contactless transactions are "authorised", they are in effect below the retailers threshold for authorisation. That's why they are only possible on small transactions below £10 or £20, depending on the retailer concerned. Above that figure the terminal will not offer contactless payment.
Same as in America when you hand over an AmEx (or other) credit card to pay for your Starbucks, they just swipe it and hand it back - no signature required.Optimists see a glass half full
Pessimists see a glass half empty

I have never been asked to put a pin in either. Been using contactless for ages.As an aside, it is not a given that you will have to input your PIN after 3 or 4 contactless transactions, I have been using the method 2 or 3 times a week for the past 18 months and have yet to be asked to do this.0 -

Some are. My point was that while there not usually authorised. Amex cards start to go online and check the card is valid after several consecutive transactions.
In the U.S. Your referring to the no signature limit. All the transactions are authorised 100% by the bank. Offline transactions are not permitted for no signature transactions in the U.S.
Contact less in the U.S. Also operates in real time as the card transmits a version of the magnetic stripe instead of the chip data that is normally sent to the terminal.0 -
Do you mean you've been using the card exclusively for contactless transactions for 18 months?
If you do 3 or 4 contactless transactions, then do a Chip and PIN transaction - the use of the PIN confirms that the card is in 'safe hands', and so you can then do another 3 or 4 contactless transactions, and so on.
I intersperse contactless transactions and Chip and PIN transactions, and so it's very rare that I'm asked for a PIN with contactless.
Ah, of course, this is probably the reason, yes I do intersperse, it certainly makes sense!0
