My goodness there is some tripe spoken here....

Just hired a van, did not have my license AT ALL but did have photo ID.

'no problem sir, we use the Govt. website to check, just bring your photo ID and NI number'.

Turned up, they went to: https://www.viewdrivingrecord.service.gov.uk and I entered the information needed (I keep a record of my driving license number with me).

    Van hired, no issue.

You lot really need to stop willy waving all the time!

The DVLA only advises that the counterpart should be destroyed, not that it needs to be destroyed.

The whole carrentals link in the first post sounds like scare mongering that the car rental system will have all sorts of problems when the new system is introduced - when in fact it will hardly have any detrimental effect, or any effect at all.

OP, I get it, shut the curtains and put on your colander. Perhaps take a breath and work out the difference in the genuine guidance of, "should" to the shyster sites use of the word, "need" and why they would deliberately go down that route.

The piece in the Guardian is almost word for word the press releases from DVLA and BVRLA stitched together.

Oh, Colin! Are you suggesting that original investigative journalism is taking second place to regurgitation of press releases...? How cynical of you!

I've had to show mine every single time I take a hire car in the UK, which I do a couple of times a year. How else can you prove you've got a license? The ID card bit won't show if you're disqualified.

I used an international driving license in the USA, never taken one in europe.

you come across as someone who worries over nothing, why have you had an international license for the USA, I have hired regularly in the USA over last 20 years and never had or needed an international license

    "phone 0913 232 9010

Calls cost £1.53p per call plus £1.53p per minute."

Can you provide a link? I been on the site and don't see that number anywhere.

    Post 33, on page 2.

That premium number only appears to be on two web pages.
    http://www.connectservicesuk.co.uk/dvla-contact/
    and
    http://www.phone-assist.co.uk/dvla-contact/
...both of which are quite clear that they aren't "affiliated", and that the number is for "our" services and not "the Gov't dept you connect to".

In other words, somebody's being very gullible indeed. Or massively disingenuous.
