Sky+ in a flat

Options
Morning all

Have just moved in to a flat and trying to sort out Sky.

The main plate in the lounge has a SAT1 and SAT2 point. The landlord said one is for Freeview and the other for Sky. Seems a bit silly in today's age where the majority of people have Sky+ there's only one input for Sky.

How would I use my Sky+ Box to its full functionality with one input?

Cheers

Toby

I'd try it before taking any other steps

They could well have one of the sat F plugs connected to a UHF aerial but he could just be confused about it.

What moto2 said but it could all depend on how old the flats are and when the cabling was done, it might be from a time before Sky+ when a single feed was the only option.

Didn't Sky home move department offer to send an engineer to sort it out when you told them you were moving ?

Presumably there *is* a dish in situ ?

Our flat is the same, only one sky feed. You need two feeds to get full functionality for Sky+

You are missing a phone socket from that face plate.

    Is there a communal dish?
Your other option is to use Freeview with a Humax PVR, unless you need the subscription channels.

Yes you will need two feeds for sky+ to work. you need to work out where your existing cable is fed from and what the chances are of an extra feed.

We had this done in my building (thru residents cajoling the managing agent and getting their own quotes). Fortunately the pre-installed TV coax was a good enough quality cable to carry a sky signal over the short distance it needed to travel so we were able to just get a big multiplexer switch and pipe sky (and regular TV combined) down all the feeds from the communal dish.

However without that you might get lucky if there is a spare sky feed or two available and your existing 'other' cable goes somewhere near the dish/switch to hook up to it.

If you have an individual dish ignore all that as you just need to worry about the connection between your TV socket and the dish directly
  • Hi All

Thank you for your prompt responses.

The flats are new build, so I have asked the landlord to go back to Love Digital TV to find out how Sky+ would be used.

The phone socket is missing, and the landlord has expressed his displeasure to the engineer for leaving a job half done.

Will see what the landlord comes back with. Hopefully both feeds are useable for Sky+, and I just need to buy the cable.

    Cheers

I have the same set up,

The sky sockets both work for the sky+ feeds, the digital tv signal come in on the uhf socket, both of these feeds are provided by the communal sky dish. The main issue with that is if your dish goes down you loose all your signals, on mine the missing socket is for the return feed to the bedrooms from the sky box.

Oh those people, yes we had them quote for our building (based in Croydon, S.London) but went with an independent installer because the independant one was noticeably cheaper.... and he didn't leave the job half finished either!

Then I nabbed £140 cashback signing up for sky via topcashback :)

...then got rid of it 3 years later deciding the £40odd a month I was spending on it would easily cover 'just buying the occasional DVD box set of the shows I actually wanted to watch and making do with non-subscription TV !
