Moved house 2 months ago but haven't contacted energy suppliers yet. Can I change?
Options
Hi,
I moved into my house from rented accommodation about 2 months ago. While I've been on top of DIY I've been slack with organising my bills and I've not contacted Scottish power who provided energy to the previous owners. I did however take the meter readings when I moved in.
I've used MSE tools and the 'Moving Home' section of Scottish Power and it's clearly not competitive for me. I was going to contact them, give them my move-in meter reading, pay them and then switch. I'm wary of walking into a very poor deal though and worse still, tying myself into it.
Can I just contact a new supplier and give them my 'move in' meter readings and pay them instead?
Thanks

No, you are in a "deemed" contract with Scottishpower.
You need to register with them, give them your meter readings and then start a switch to another supplier which will take 3=6 weeks.
If your readings are similar to the previous occupants closing readings everything should be ok however if they differ you will have problems.
This why you should always contact them on the day you move in so that they can send a meter reader should they wish to.0 -
You are already in a 'poor deal', as the default tariff you will now be billed on for the duration of the deemed contract is Standard Variable, which is the most expensive.
Why do you think you could pay another supplier for energy supplied for two months by SP?No free lunch, and no free laptop0
