central heating Timer

Tonight my central heating timer finally gave up the ghost.

It is really old

and is the old clock design with Randall 102 written on it,

Looks like this

I can buy another one and stick it in the same place ...But I would like to know if there is anything else slightly more modern I can replace it with ?

Anything I should be looking for that restricts my choice ..Is there a voltage or wiring differences ?

In true MSE fashion I would also like value for money.

On my wish list would be a thermostat ..But as this unit is in my kitchen ..ground floor of a three story house a movable thermostat would be even better.

Any help much appreciated ..Even just being told I have to replace like for like would help.

A programmable thermostat would be ideal, probably a wireless one so the actual thermostat can be done distance from where the current timer is. These are easy enough to find.

If your current timer controls hot water as well as heating you'll need to make sure the new one does too.

Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon

    Thanks.
Yes the switch on the side of the unit has up for just hot water or down for water and heating.
The boiler is a worcester bosch highflow 400

Old but doesn't give me any trouble

There are cheaper less hi-tech ones out there.
I have had the Salus about 2 months and its brilliant, you need an internet connection, you can see what the temperature in the house is and turn heating and hot water on and off from anywhere using your smartphone, tablet or computer.
  • Hi globalds – saw your post and thought I could offer some advice.

Just to be clear I do some work with Honeywell, but they've got a reasonably priced smart thermostat that I think would be ideal. Their Single Zone Thermostat is really easy to use and also allows you to control your heating either via your smart phone wherever you are or via the control itself (Pocketlint just did an article on it actually which you can find by Googling)... If you really want savings over time, then look at evohome.

If you're looking something a bit more basic, they have some well regarded ones such as the CM907. Any questions then feel free to give me a shout.

It has to be asked why a dual channel timer is used with a combi boiler... unless I've mis-read the info?

I am not sure what you mean ?

You seem to be thinking that your Randall controls your hot water and heating separately, in reality it doesn't: looks like a left over from a previous version of your system, which, as you say, gives you no problem!

A wireless programmable stat would be perfect: I have a CM927 which is perfect for me as I like to program my daily 'on offs' differently for each day of the week.

Anyway - sorry to confuse you, it was just an observation so that you didn't limit yourself to replacing like-for-like.

Oh so a second channel would be to control an immersion heater ?

I thought that because I can have only water or water and heating it required more.

    I don't have an immersion heater .
