Haven't had a dependant for the last 3 years though. We want the best possible environment for our son and this clearly isn't it. Not everyone has a spare couple of grand floating about to just simply move somewhere else and buy brand new furniture.
You move somewhere, you pay a deposit plus moving costs. You then get your deposit BACK on the place you've moved out of - so the total cost to you is the moving costs. You can hire a van and DIY it cheaply. Yes, you need to fund the double deposit for a short period, but you clearly do have some savings if you're saving for a deposit to buy somewhere.
Yes, there will be a cost to you - several hundred quid, at most, rather than several grand - but sometimes you need to put a price on your wellbeing. If your current situation is so intolerable, that couple of hundred quid will be money well spent.0 -
OK, now I'm puzzled. Why does "moving somewhere else" require several grand spending on "brand new furniture"?

Our current deposit was not placed in a scheme and therefore we believe the landlord will keep it to use to fix the issue that they won't fix while we are here. We will need sofas, beds, fridge freezer, the final rent on this place plus deposit and rent for the new place plus removal.
We aren't saving to buy, we are saving to rent, we are almost living wage to wage each month as I am on maternity leave and my maternity payments have just ended.
Any idea on the gas safety check? Is it our responsibility to inform landlord we need this or is it landlords responsibility to know when it is needed and to supply the check?0 -

By law your LL must have the gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe Engineer. Ask your LL to arrange the safety check and if he doesn't do it report him to HSE. Do you have a CO alarm in the property? If not then buy one, don't put your lives at risk.
Now for the ace. Again, by law your LL must put your deposit in one of the three government backed schemes. If your LL does not do this then you can sue him for up to 3 times your deposit. You could use this as a bargaining chip. Let your LL know that you know the deposit should be protected but if he gives you your full deposit back now then you'll say no more about it. That'll give you the deposit for the next (hopefully much nicer) place.

Would the gas check issue be a crime/breach of contract? Anyone we can contact regarding this? Especially with a 7 month old living here, which landlord knows about.
What can we do in relation to deposit scheme issue and how can we check for sure if it is in a scheme or not ( although 99% sure it's not)
