Sage is driving me nuts

Does anyone know of a good alternative to Sage Accounting?
They [Sage] have now introduced a mandatory monthly charge for a help line, which I dont need, so effectively a rental system. The old package we bought a few years ago is now obsolete according to them. This annoys me intensely because they have effectively built in obsolescence to their product.
Any advice or receommendations please?
Thanks

Most software providers have figured out that the 'sell a CD' model isn't as good as the 'sell a yearly/monthly subscription' (in whatever form that takes).
You're going to struggle to find anything that won't do that to you now - or even if they do - that won't convert it later on.0 -
Plenty of people use Quickbooks; I haven't myself so can't personally recommend.
Depends exactly what you want.
For payroll, I use Moneysoft which is very user-friendly and a fraction the price of Sage. They have an accounting package too.0 -
Just use the 'obsolete' system if you don't need support.
At work I'm currently using Sage 50 2010 and Sage Instant 2013 which I'm regularly phoned about to remind me how they might explode at any moment, but they are still doing the job perfectly fine for now (I don't use Sage payroll though and therefore don't 'need' updates).
I'm pretty sure last time they phoned a couple of months back they quoted a single upgrade fee (of something extortionate) but didn't try to sell me a subscription - I'm sure upgrades are still available as a one off if you ask but they aren't advertised on the site.0
