Second hand car missing parts?
Hello
I purchased a Landrover Freelander back in March with a 3 month warranty and 12 month brand new MOT from a local secondhand car garage. This was sold as having a soft top and a hard top. When we went to see the car the hard top was on and the manager showed us the soft top which was stored in the car. We asked how it would be put on and he said that he doesn't know but it would be a two man job.
I purchased the car and 2 weeks later my husband and his friend tried to put the soft top on. They ready the manual and took the hard top off but when they fetched the bag that the manager had given us with the tools in to put the soft top on 6 screws where missing. We searched the interior of the car and nothing anywhere. They put the hard top back on and the soft top had to go back in to the loft.
I contacted a landrover dealer and asked how much the pieces would be as I figured they would be cheap as they are such small screws. Well they where not cheap at all!
I contacted the garage today and the man bluntly asked what I wanted him to do. I felt very put on the spot and as if he was making me feel unreasonable for asking. I said he could at the very least contact the previous owners and ask if they have them. He said he would but if they didn't then there was nothing he could do as he gave me all the bits it came to him with.
I am wondering is legally obliged to replace the missing screws considering it was sold as having a soft top conversion and didn't note that any bits would be missing?

Wouldn't the obvious answer to the dealer have been "I want you to supply a set of screws so I can fit the roof"?
Either you negociate that with the dealer or buy them yourself.0 -

I did say that and he said he wasn't prepared to do that so he doesn't know what I want him to do.
I am only wondering if he is legally obliged to supply me with these screws because there is not any way he will negotiate on the matter.0 -
i have owned nothing but landrovers for the last 20 years and they overcharge for everything. My advice would be to pay half each for the screws?
or find a scrap yard with a freelander soft top and get the screws from there! they won't charge alot? or look on ebay for someone breaking a freelander!Plan: [STRIKE]Finish off paying the remainder of my debts[/STRIKE].
[STRIKE]Save up for that rainy day[/STRIKE].
Start enjoying a stress debt free life.....now enjoying. thanks to all on MSE0 -

Yes, if it was advertised at the point of sale as having a hard top and soft top he should supply all the parts necessary for it to meet that description.0 -
How much are the screws from LR?
How much can you get them for from Euro Car Parts, German Swedish French, or eBay?
Ask the dealer for the above money back so that you can use the roof that he advertised, and buy the screws. Show him the prices.
Offer him the soft top back, whereupon he can refund you whatever LR charge for that, maybe that will change his mind!0
