Nothing wrong with pencils, crayons and paper. Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Shakespeare and may others did perfectly well without an Ipad.
Stick Shakespeare in a modern office and ask him to fathom out a legacy database, however, and he may struggle....
To be fair I agree, there's no need for iPads in schools - but there's also something to be said for getting them very familiar with technology, so it becomes simply part of life rather than something to learn. Think of it more like teaching you to write, rather than teaching you English. It's the basic skill we're looking at here, not the high level ability.
For a 6 year old, get the Mini - it's much easier to handle, much lighter and will work just as well for their young eyes and hands. At about 8-9 I'd be considering the Air, but even as an adult I don't find it as comfortable to hold for long periods.
(Credentials for answering this question: I owned an iPhone 4, currently own an 6 Plus and iPad air, and use an iPad Mini and similarly sized Samsung Galaxy Tab regularly)"You did not pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You were lucky enough to come of age at a time when housing was cheap, welfare was generous, and inflation was high enough to wipe out any debts you acquired. I’m pleased for you, but please stop being so unbearably smug about it."0
