Hello!

The family are going to America in July flying from Dublin and we currently have worldwide travel insurance included with our credit card.
Having looked into the terms and conditions of this travel insurance it is only valid if the start and end point of the journey are in the UK. On ringing them the trip from NI to Dublin would be covered but not the Dublin to America part.
Googling this, it seems like it is a bigger issue than I thought with most insurers not covering a holiday departing from the Republic if you live in the UK.
Does anyone have any experience of this and what insurer did you end up using?

Thanks.

If I start my holiday at home in Northern Ireland and travel to America and have worldwide insurance then I would expect the insurance to cover the holiday in its entirety whether I travel via Dublin - or London - or Amsterdam. Or even if my first leg is a flight, a coach trip, a train ride or a car ride. I cannot see how a standard insurance policy would eliminate every leg of the journey after your first destination outside the UK. If that were the case how would it treat a 2 centre holiday - 1 week in New York followed by 1 week in Florida? Your holiday travel starts in the UK - the insurance if with a reliable company will cover the entire holiday.

This question seems to come up from time to time. I live in Belfast and have an annual multi trip policy with Aviva. I queried this issue with them a couple of years ago - this was their reply:

"Having checked with our underwriters, I can confirm that you are fully covered for flights from Dublin. Any claims related to flights are considered to start from the point that you leave your home. As your home address is within the UK, for insurance purposes, your flight from Dublin would be considered your 'Point of International Departure'."

We have annual Family Travel Insurance via PruHealth, and they provided the same response as the one bigsy received from Aviva.

According to then, as I am travelling from NI to Dublin first, this is considered to be the starting point of my trip for them.

Yep, it has come up numerous times (and also on On Your Behalf on Radio Ulster) - the standard answer is that you need to always check with the company BEFORE you purchase to ensure that they will cover you for departing from Dublin.

    Second That. ^^^^
I always listen to OYB on Radio Ulster when doing the house work on the weekends. VERY Informative..
Basically it is a big problem for us here in Northern Ireland and comes up all the time. UK Insurers are insuring you for leaving from a UK Airport..... You will either have to phone your current insurer and see if they will cover you for the trip from Dublin (May cost an extra on your premium) or shop around elsewhere..... (ALWAYS READ THE SMALL PRINT...) whatever you do GET IT IN WRITING !!.

[ Just on the quirks of insurance..... another issue came up on the program this weekend was Car Key Insurance on your car insurance policy... do you realise that on a lot of policies if you have a spare key then the Car Key Insurance element of the cover is invalid? MAD !!! ]

As said above, I would assume (though should check) that your journey commences when you leave your home (which is in the UK), so it shouldn't matter where your flight departs from.

There is usually a part in the policy around car breakdown on the way to the airport, so they take the car journey as part of the holiday.

You should never ever assume anything with an insurance policy - you absolutely MUST read closely what is covered and what isn't before you buy it.

I would strongly recommend purchasing your own insurance from a reputable company rather than relying on free insurance from a credit card provider.

The insurance policy was one bundled with my credit card that covers the whole family so i didn't really pick it just for this trip -we have used it leaving belfast a lot of times before.
The whole not being insured going out of Dublin airport wouldn't have even crossed my mind if it wasn't for a friend mentioning it.
Which insurers definitely do insure going out from Dublin on top of the ones already mentioned? Wonder if there is a list anywhere. Would save a lot of ringing round!

Funny I never knew this problem until we got the magazine from Belfast City Council round the doors over Easter. And they pointed it out to us. I've been traveling abroad for near 30 years now including flying from Dublin numerous times, and never heard of this, so was a bit of a shock.

I'm planning on going to America next year from Dublin so will have to be careful what I do now
