Thanks everyone this has become a very knowledgeable thread.

As mentioned, I use Musclefood.com for their chicken breasts and they are exceptional value for money.

My protein comes from bodybuildingwarehouse, but Myprotein are just as good.

Stay away from the shiny advertising of Maxi muscle as it is very very expensive.

This book is old, but it opened my eyes to a new style of training. If I knew then what I know now, I would have saved a lot of time and effort chasing impossible goals!

I use myprotein. Their standrad strawberry shake is my favourite as it seems to shake up more whippy/foamy than the others. Also good on hot oat cereal.

If you use milk (semi-skimmed here) you can reduce the amount of powder you use thus saving money but increasing sugar intake.

I am seconding musclefood..the meat i have had ( chicken breast, turkey, the chilli chicken sausages are DEVINE, and the steak) - all have been a good price.

I have also used myprotein, and the protein works in the past. I prefer the protein works flavours however myprotein is the slightly cheaper protein powder out of the 2.

I have been buying from myprotein for ages. They do a massive range of flavours. Just get the standard whey, called impact whey protein. Don't get caught up in slightly higher amounts of protein like the isolate etc.

MP do loads and loads of offers. Also I have a referal code if you want it. I used bulk powders before but didn't really get on with their chocolate protein it was very bitty. The Protein Works I know a lot of guys use as well.
Hi, I was going to order from my protein and remembered you had a referal code would you mind pming me with it please, also do they do bigger quantities than 1kg because thats all I can see.

Just to add a little more re Protein : you do not actually add "the bulk" during your work out. It is the period after your work out, when your body rebuilds itself after the stress of a workout, that the actual bulk is built. This is where the supplemental protein comes in - it basically provides more fuel to the body, to build "bigger" (i.e. not more) muscle during that recovery period.

This is not to say that supplements are a magic bullet - but they can help if you target their use. I'm a triathlete myself and I use an all in one fuel/recovery supplement from USN as it is very low in sugar but has good proteins and carbs, with a dab of creatine thrown in.

I'm in it for "lean muscle" though, rather than bulk. Don't forget the real message though - these are not a short cut for the real work to be done in the gym. If you take the shake, and don't do the work - you'll just end up fat.

GNC sometimes do good 2 for 1 offers with a good loyalty point programme where you can swap points for products.

If you are still after Protein - there are a bunch of guys where I work that "lift" and they are all pretty bulky : they all use the beef protein stuff - I think it's branded as MuscleMeds Carnivor.

Hope that helps a little. Best of luck.

Which one is it you use? is it the R3 Excell? I currently use the Dietfuel as a morning breakfast \ meal replacement (avoids bad choices)..

I can also recommend the myprotein stuff. I use the impact whey and also the impact diet whey as a meal replacement. I also add creatine to these. My main aim is for my martial arts training, to aid recoevery and improve performance.
Im getting on a bit and notice a big difference in recovery soreness when i take a shake after training. The extra lean muscle is an added bonus too.

Eat clean and in the right quantities if you want to bulk up.

Bulk doesnt equate to strength though, i know some extremely strong people who arent very bulky.

Does anyone recommend anything to help with DOMS after a heavy workout? Do any of these things like HMB etc actually do anything or shall I just stick to the standard protein shake?

I buy from bulk powders, I use non-flavoured protein and use it as my after work out shake which includes powdered spinach, banana and soya milk. It isn't that I dislike the flavours but I try to avoid sweetners as much as possible.

I only use it after a long work out where I have been dead lifting etc (130kg, trying to up that) or after a particularly hard rugby session, my actual diet is protein high and contains very little carbohydrates, wheb I do eat carbs it is typically wild rice or chick peas/lentils.

I don't think there is much you can really do about DOMS apart from getting used to it.

BCAA (powder form) are usually the best thing to take (and include HMB) as they help the protein synthesis, which decreases recovery time, and therefore helping DOMS.

However, many protein shakes now include BCAAs, so depending on how much you workout, you may not need additional ones. What type of exercise do you do and how often?

The best way to recover from DOMS quicker is a long stretching session afterwards, foam rolling, light exercise and drinking lots of water.
