Protein shakes

My son has just started to do a bit of weight training, he is very thin and wants to build himself up. I have looked in Holland and Barratt today but got a bit confused as to what to get. Has anybody got any advice on what to get and where to get them from please.

My protein. Bulk powders. A few companies provide powders.
He could consider an all on one which will have carbs and proteins and some creatine as well.
If he wants to build he must eat the calories. Muscle is built in the kitchen.
How old is your son? Where/how is he working out (home, free weights etc)? Is he following a work out plan?

All I know is be careful as some of the shakes have more protein in than the body can use so it's just wasted. I agree with the above and muscle being built in the kitchen x

I stick with the Nurishment shake from the supermarket. Far cheaper and safer, with all the required ingredients. ;)

    I use Hemp protein myself.
Full of Omega fatty, good bit of fiber and all plant based.

It doesn't absorb into the body as quickly as whey protein so not as good for people doing serious work outs but for someone who exercises intermittently and doesn't eat fish often, it's an excellent addition to the diet.

He is 18 and has just joined a gym, he has just had a basic induction at the moment and is not on a programme. I think he has seen all the big guys in there walking about shaking there plastic shake bottles. He is not a very good eater and dose'nt like fish very much.

You don't need the shakes to be honest. A good diet is more than enough for most people. Protein is used to repair and build muscle tissue so when you tear it from working out, it helps repair it faster so you feel sore for less time and means faster recovery.

Hemp was the best choice for my needs. You can get Soya as well, but a lot of people are weary of that because of claims it might affect hormones in some way (it might if taken to excess on a daily basis)

The ones the guys in the Gym are using will likely be Whey or Creatine for the more hardcore gym user. It's more of a fad just now than it is practical though.

Please could you clarify how the Nurishment brand of drinks filled with E-numbers and a ratio or 16g sugar to 5g protein is "safer"?

Furthermore, gram per gram of protein, it is way way more expensive than a tub of protein power.

OP, personally I stay away from H&B protein. Firstly it is often overpriced (unless doing a promotion). Secondly there are better powders out there. A well known auction web site is full of sports nutrition providers, just be sure to check the nuritional breakdown as some have higher & protein/100g than others.

And to reiterate what others have said muscle is built in the kitchen though shakes are good to have first thing when you might not feel like eating chicken/fish etc. They are also worth having post workout.

Your son will benefit from a good free weights routine built around deadlifts, squat, benchpress, shoulder press, pull ups & dips, combined with lots of sleep and good food.

I look at my pecks, count the Years of drinking this brand, assess my health to date and say "WOW!" :D

Thanks for all the advice from everyone. Roughly how many grams of protein per 100g should I aim for?. I would also like to stay away from ones loaded with suger.

I have been buying from myprotein for ages. They do a massive range of flavours. Just get the standard whey, called impact whey protein. Don't get caught up in slightly higher amounts of protein like the isolate etc.

MP do loads and loads of offers. Also I have a referal code if you want it. I used bulk powders before but didn't really get on with their chocolate protein it was very bitty. The Protein Works I know a lot of guys use as well.
