1 bed flat convert to 2 bed flat.Council tax.

Hello everyone,

My own flat (owned by me and 50% share of freehold). On the lease when I purchased it showed 1 bedroom,a bathroom/toilet,a kitchen,a dining room and a surgery yes it was previously a doctors surgery before I bought it 24 years age.

Since I owned it the room has been used as a spare bedroom and now its a permanent bedroom. No additional space has been created.
Will the council tax need to be changed to show 2 bedrooms and how do I go about this, please ?.
I phoned my council, they did not know and have failed to reply to my phone calls and emails.
I will be selling this place end of this year so I want to get as much paperwork in order soon.

Thank you in advance. JB.

The council tax band is not based on the number of bedrooms but the value of the property.

Thank you for the reply,in this situation an extra bedroom will increase the value of the property.

It was a room before. It's a room now.

The indicator for the potential change in price band is work requiring planning permsission or building regulations approval. As you have done neither, there is no effect.

Also, if it was a one bedroom flat when you bought it, it doesn't matter if it's now a seven bedroomed mansion. The re-value only comes once a new occupier moves in - ie. you sell or let the property.

There is nothing for you to pay extra.
