Am now in a quandry as what to do re the boiler.Insurance company rang and said the report came back that my boiler due to its age etc is only worth £200 and I have 2 options
1) have it repaired which will cost £550 they will give £200 towards it me paying the rest.
2)get a new boiler and they will give me £250 towards the new one and send in someone to give me a quote for this.Or get my own quote.
I have seven days to decide and I really don't know what to do:eek: will I be throwing my money away having it repaired for it to go wrong again and after all the trouble I have had I feel half inclined to say s-d the expense and go for a new one. What does the Elite think ?0 -

What make of boiler is it that you have at the moment.
Can you get anyone to supply/fit a new boiler and they will give you £250, or does it have to be who they say?
Have you had a quote from a local independent to get it fixed/did they tell you what was wrong with your boiler?“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Is the house your own or is it rented?
In theory at some stage if you want or need to sell your house for whatever reason if you have a new boiler and all of its relevant paperwork then it will be a plus point
also a new boiler might save money as it will have a modern rating system.
Its a difficult decision and then there is the dreadful mess that comes from having builders and plumbers in the house doing anything ...“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -

Unfair:( (I think the word I'm looking for, technically, strictly, is actually "unjust" but I shall not be pedantic).
I think there's a reference to Infant Milk formula being excluded under the new terms, so I demand that this be taken out!
A warning not to buy that pouch of cat food - seems they have something rather unpleasant picked up for M there! 60p in A but £2.24 in M - you show me where M has a pouch of cat food that's £2.24!:(
Would I have a voucher on the new site?

Nanny...will they only give you the £250 towards the new boiler if you use the recommened supplier or are you free to get your own quotes...
If you are free to get your own quotes than I would do that to at least get an indication
Have a look at the British gas offer I posted earlier they are offering £400 back when you trade in an old boiler.....
Regarding the repairs...who knows how long they will last and if thats all thats wrong with the boiler it could be repaired and go on for many more years or indeed another bit could break in 6 months.
One thing I can say is that a new boiler will be much more efficient for you and overall you will see your heating costs go down if you use it the same way you use your existing boiler and in getting a new one it should come with at least a 3 year, possibly a 5 year and in some cases a 7 year guarantee....
my advice...get at least one more quote in addition to the quote you are being offered and if time allows get 2 additional quotes so you can check that you are being charged fairly my your insurance company etcfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Having had a temperamental boiler myself that had been repaired then waited until the coldest time of year to decide it had had enough and turn itself into a water feature in the corner of my kitchen:eek:
I would go for new, at least you will have time to look around for a decent one and it's not fast approaching winter, which in a way gives you longer to look around.
If you have it repaired who's to say how long the repair will last? It may like mine wait until snow is on the ground and you need it to stop working. Then you have the added stress of finding a plumber, boiler fitter that isn't busy at the worst time of year.
Just my opinion;)0 -

Ours is different as it is warm air heating, but repairs on the last one only bought us a year. I personally would go for a new one. Have you looked to see if you could get help towards a new one with the previous link? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
