Another tradesman who agrees entirely with Phil's post - I never ask for a deposit (even when offered) ask for materials payment on delivery and the labour invoice at the end of the job, or staged if a large job.

    90% ?? Walk away.

We did. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had told us up front, but they made it look like the deposit was 25% which we were happy with. Then at the last minute they asked for another 65%! But apparently that is what they normally do and they have been going for nearly 20 years.

The bizarre thing is that people are happy to pay companies
Ike Wren, B&q, Everest, Wickes, Homebase etc the vast majority of the costs up front (often up to 90% ) without questioning it.

And if you look at the reviews of many of these companies, they are the one you should not be paying huge deposits to.

True but it's easier to take legal action against the big sheds compared with tradesmen who can disappear over night.

Tradesmen has almost become a derogatory term these days. No wonder no one aspires to be one. They are perceived and treated like Romanies coming to sell you lucky charms at the door.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

For bathrooms and kitchens I've seen some contractors ask the client to pay a deposit for the order (or asking them just to buy the materials direct)
But wouldn't be paying an amount like that when it includes labour too - just asking for trouble
