PCN for No left turn into Dowsett Road, N17

Hi everyone,

I need advice on this PCN I received. A letter turned up with the following contravention:

"Failing to Drive in the direction shown by the arrow on a blue sign proceeding in the wrong direction"

After a bit of googling I have found out they have recently made this a no left turn but there isn't a sign just the marking on the road. I am unfamiliar with the area so was using sat nav which took me through this turn. It seems like this new unattended camera giving out PCN is quite new as there are a few people who have posted online about this around the same time as my ticket.

Some people have written to ask how many PCN, when this has been in place and how many appeals were successful etc under freedom information request.

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/left_turn_into_dowsett_rd_n17_fr?unfold=1 (Comments on this request shed some light)

I just wanted to know if I have any grounds for appeal in this matter? I will be very grateful for any advice.
Many thanks
Comping since September 2011.

pepipoo.com are the experts on this sort of thing. We deal mainly with parking tickets on private land here on this site so your best bet is to read the FAQs on pepipoo then post your query there.

I'd be questioning why there isn't a "no left turn" sign at the junction, and no "no entry" signs on the road you can't enter. Sure there's a marking on the road but they aren't always that easy to see and aren't known for being up to date.

This sounds familiar - there was a thread not so long ago in the Motoring forum where someone was pulled for turning left where traffic signs signalled right turn only. (There was no No Entry signage, and none needed. A sign with a white arrow pointing right in a blue circle means - Turn Right only).

If such a sign was in place at the OP's location* then the penalty was likely given correctly. (Subject to certain criteria being met - which Pepipoo will help with).

    * OP - are you 100% sure there wasn't a sign, and only markings on the road?

Silly question, but what does PCN stand for in this instance?

Which road were you on before turning into Dowsett Road? Google maps shows some one-way routes around there.

Thanks for the all the responses.

It says on the letter I was on High St. I haven't had a chance to revisit the spot yet but going by the comment on the above thread by a local.

"There is no "No left turn" sign, but only an arrow pointing straight ahead. This is a place that you could turn left for as long as I can remember, having lived in Tottenham for decades. I don't understand why it changed, as now to travel down Dowsett Road you must turn left into Reform Row and negotiate Honeysett or Albion Road, then turn left into Dowsett Road. If you miss this turning, you must go quite a way down the High Road, turning into Stoneleigh Road, wend your way through the one-way system north at the back of the shops into Wilson's Avenue to turn right into Dowsett Road - not easy as there is no box junction. "

"Amazingly, it was perfectly ok to turn left here for a long time. There has been no change to the physical environment that I can see making it more dangerous. I don't remember there being a plethora of accidents there that would indicate that it was dangerous, nor did left turns cause undue delays at the junction, so the rationale for this escapes me (unless of course, the rationale is to extract as much money from local residents as possible). A "no left turn" would make it much clearer, but the ambiguity is to Haringey's advantage, I guess."

There are a set of traffic lights that's that show a green arrow going straight on and a white arrow in a blue circle showing straight ahead only. How many clues do you need?

As for 'recently changed' the 2008 image shows it was no left turn then.

Now you know why some people refer to them as 'Pratt Navs'
