Passport Help .....??

Hi everyone,

Unsure as to whether this is the right place but if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

So I want to apply for a passport for my son and I. The problem is I lost my passport years ago during a house move. I reported it missing so that's not a problem. The problem is applying for a new one. I have since moved house, got married and I am unable to get information about my dad as I have no contact with him. Also, I was included in my grandmothers passport when I was younger but sadly she is no longer with us so don't know these details either. Real mess.

Do I just apply for a brand new one in my married name? And as for my son, can I apply at the same time or do I wait for mine to get sorted? His application needs my information but obviously I don't have a passport so cannot provide that?

I have birth certificates and whatnot, but is there going to be loads of problems?

Thanks to anyone who cab help.

First, if you didn't already, pick up a couple of application forms from the post office. The current requirements, info, documents etc, should become clearer for your case when you study the form.

I'm about to renew my passport and used this official government site which has plenty of information -

    https://www.gov.uk/browse/abroad/passports
  • I've already got the applications, I know what details are needed but some information I am unable to suppy.

What details are lacking? As you previously had a passport, the details from that application should already be on file (they used to discard everything after 12 years' inactivity but this is probably no longer done). Your name, birthdate and birthplace are the main identifiers if you don't have that passport number. Don't worry too much, it's probably not as problematic as you fear. You and your son are entitled to a passport, they just have to make sure you are not an imposter, perhaps an interview is necessary. It might be worth calling them on 0300 222 0000.

  • Because I need to change the details, I cant just do that online as I would need old passport details. I have got the application to apply for a new one but it asks about all my family. Don't know if they're needed as they're not asterisked but I'm sure it would help.

What's the number? I may indeed give them a call. Is that just a customer service type line?

Oh sorry, that's the Passport Office advice line, as given on their website that Neil indicated.

I think the point is that you are not making a first-time application, so you only have to fill the sections of the form for passport replacement or renewal, regardless of any change of details you want for the new one such as your married name. You are still the same person who has held one adult passport already. Your previous passport is not available and presumably you don't know its number, so just fill the form with that information accordingly. As long as they can find you in their records your application should go ahead normally,0 even if they have to call you in for an interview. Changing your name or anything else is incidental, on production of marriage certificate etc.

Only if your first application was too long ago and no longer in their records will you need to apply from scratch as a first time passport application, with all those family details etc. That seems unlikely. If you call, perhaps they can tell you right away if you are already on file.
