I've got a combi microwave/oven/grill at the moment the hob on the old/broken cooker is holding up, but if/when it packs in I'll get one of the little mini gas hob that I can just get out when I need it.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

    grilled cheese sandwiches:

Butter the outside of 2 slices of bread, put cheese in between (usually cheddar) and put sandwich together with the butter on the outside. heat up a fry pan and brown the bread - by the time you've done both sides the cheese wshould have melted - don't use too high a heat.

Sparky, that may work for you but i bert your resale value on your house will be less without the hob, not many could cook without it.

You can now buy reusable bags that can be used in a toaster to make toasted sandwiches - if I can find out the make, I'll come back and edit the post. Quick and easy and a lot less mess than using sandwich makers/george foreman grills.
For cheese on toast, I just use the grill function on the microwave: I lightly toast the bread first, spread on grated cheese, then stick in the microwave (1-3 mins depending on the power of the grill) Also slice some tomatoes on the top - yummy!

I've got those bags -they are by JML and I got mine in the local Woolworths, but I think you can get them in Wilkinsons and other shops too.

My oven is like you need (except for the width) but has the grill inside the oven part, so you can either switch on the oven or the grill, could you look for something like this? It is an electric oven, don't know if this makes a difference?

Yep, I remember now, getting them from Wilkinsons - I think they're really good, and save a lot of mess cleaning pans and sandwich toasters etc

Hi everyone-thanks for the replies. I'll give doing the cheese sandwiches in the pan as described to see what they are like and also look out for the toastie bags. The George Foreman sounded ideal but I can't find it for sale in this country only in the U.S

Lillibet- it's a gas oven, but I have no preference over a gas or electric oven I've used both before. however I only like gas hobs. Is yours all electric or a combi? The width has to be 50cm though as the kitchen is too small to put a wider oven in.

A combination grill and microwave is also a possibility I hadn't considered. I had considered a small grill on its own, but it's yet something else to store.
