Both my oven and George Foreman need replacing. Due to the smallness and lack of worktop space in my kitchen I need an oven with a lid. My current oven the hinges on the lid have broken and we have to prop it up by the microwave. which means the microwave has to stand on the worktops creating me less space instead of being on a wall bracket or shelf. We have started looking about for a new oven but we are already limited by width size (50cm) and needing the lid. Our current oven is a double oven with the top bit being a combined oven and grill. Some ovens we've looked at just give the grill, which means we then have an even smaller oven or are just an oven and no grill.
I love my GF and use it a lot, the only thing I would change is to have removable plates so they can be put in sink. That would solve my problem of no grill apart from cheese on toast which the family love. I've seen some GF advertised as grill and melts so they'd do cheese on toast but none have removable plates. The GF lives in a large cupboard after use so it doesn't take up valuable worktop space.
I can't think of anything other than cheese on toast that I would need a conventinal grill for and it seems a bit silly to buy an oven which might not have the other requirements just so I can make cheese on toast.
Help me solve this please.

A friend has a cooker where the grill has never worked (built in cooker).
She does toast in the toaster then puts cheese on and microwaves itworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I toast in a toaster and then melt the cheese in a microwave too. Yum!0

I love grilled cheese sandwiches now more than cheese on toast. You do them in the frying pan - if you need to know how I can explain it.

It's been a long long time since I ate cheese, but I agree about grilled cheese sandwiches being easy; make an unbuttered cheese sandwich and fry it in butter until both sides are brown.0

thanks Sharifa - I may as well explain how I do mine now
...thought I would just chip in that I butter the bread, make a sandwich of the two slices but with the buttered sides facing outward so no need to add extra butter to the frying pan.

There is a new GF out which does have removable plates and which does make cheese on toast. I saw it on QVC a few months ago, but since then I think GF has moved over to Ideal World. The model number was GRP90WGR (I'm really sad and note down stuff like that even though I don't often buy the stuff:o ). Or, on QVC the other night they had a new thing like a GF but made by Hulk Hogan - you can see it here: http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.aspx/app.detail/params.item.825882/walk.yah.UKHG-UK14 I thought it looked good but couldn't justify buying one even though I was tempted!Jane

I dont put the toast in the micro as it goes a bit soggy i find I just do the taost in the toaster, melt the butter in the micro and then spread it on the toast like butter and its scrummy, when I was a waitress they did this too and then browned it off with one of those chefs blow torch!Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Its surprising what you can do without when i got a new kitchen i couldnt make up my mind which hob to get so i left for later then i realised i hardly ever use it i do veg in the steamer heat things up in the microwave do stews and soups in the slow cooker and the rest in the oven or grill the only thing i miss it for is fried eggs and i tell myself they are not that good for you anyway lol
so ive saved money and space on my worktop where my hob should be0 -
You can now buy reusable bags that can be used in a toaster to make toasted sandwiches - if I can find out the make, I'll come back and edit the post. Quick and easy and a lot less mess than using sandwich makers/george foreman grills.
For cheese on toast, I just use the grill function on the microwave: I lightly toast the bread first, spread on grated cheese, then stick in the microwave (1-3 mins depending on the power of the grill) Also slice some tomatoes on the top - yummy!
