The metro goes out to the coast and the metro centre. Durham is only a short train ride. There are trains up the Tyne valley to places like Hexham & Corbridge

Yes I second using the Metro to go to Whitley Bay. Beautiful coastline and lighthouse. It's only around 45 mins away.

There is the Metrocentre which is a big indoor shopping centre. http://www.intumetrocentre.co.uk/Shopping/MetrOasis

I stayed at the Premier Inn on the Quayside recently - great location just opposite the Baltic centre. There's definitely a day's worth of stuff in the city - castle, cathedral (next to the cathedral is the Lit and Phil Library which is worth popping in to just so you can pretend you're in an old-fashioned club), several galleries, theatres etc. Walking from Whitley bay to Tynemouth is a pleasant walk and Tynemouth is worth a couple of hours pottering around the antique shops and ruins.

Tynemouth is nice, much better than whitley bay.
Quayside, Ouseburn is nice with a few bars places to eat.
Whitley bay does have an amazing ice cream shop though

Take a visit to Beamish Open air Museum and spend an entire day in one of the most fantastic locations in the UK.

It takes less than an hour via the metro and a bus.
