So, my lowest washing temperature is about 60 as that's what the hot water tank is set to.
Sorry to hijack, but until you can get a new machine, can't you just turn down your boiler each time you want to wash clothes?
When we moved recently our washing was coming out the machine steaming and we realised the previous owner had connected a cold fill machine to the hot water pipe.
We got a plumber out to change it but in the meantime we turned the boiler off each time we used the machine.
Back to topic. Even if you paid in cash or gift vouchers, I'd still try going back to the shop and explaining.
Do they still sell the coat?0 -
Old machines with hot fill don't always control their temperature how you'd imagine. Mine just fills up with whatever temperature comes out the hot water tank. The internal heater only comes on if it's cooler than the setting on the machine. So, my lowest washing temperature is about 60 as that's what the hot water tank is set to.0

You're all right, I've been a bit confused as it's so long since I used anything other than the 60 cycle. I tried the 40 cycle today to see what would happen, and it did use both hot and cold together. What I was remembering is that older machines can sometimes go hotter than the setting on the cycle. Unusually hot water from the tank, and/or higher pressure hot than cold can mean the machine fills up with hotter water than expected. I had this problem at my last house and 40 wasn't really 40 when I used the machine there.
Hope this makes more sense now. As for the machine, it's only 32 years old. Plenty of life left in it0 -
I was beginning to woner if this was still OS moneysaving Replace a functional washing machine?!?"Every single person has at least one secret that would break your heart. If we could just remember this, I think there would be a lot more compassion and tolerance in the world."— Frank Warren0
