Phone extension issue

Weve just moved into a new house with wiring in each room for a phone extension socket. Currently they have blank faceplates and the wires behind the faceplates are not connected (series extension circuit)

I wanted to test the wiring at the master socket first before wiring any extension faceplates. I connected blue, orange and blue/white to terminals 2,3&5 on the BT faceplate. When I connect the phone I get a constant engaged tone. If I swap to the test socket the phone works perfectly.

So the extension wiring is clearly a problem, given none of the other locations have bared wires or any kind of connection what problem can I have right at the master socket plate?

Could it be a fault with the lower portion of the master socket itself?

Thanks

I don't understand what you have done, and what config works and what doesn't
  • If I don't have the extension wire connected to the master socket the phone works perfectly from both the faceplate and the test socket.

If I connect the extension wire to the back of the master socket and plug the phone in I get a constant engaged tone. If I connect to the test socket the phone functions properly.

I connected the first room on the extension to a face plate. If I plug into that I get loud beeping similar to a fax machine.

    Does that help?

It's possible a fault with the extension wiring somewhere but it's also possible it's the faceplate.

Search for NTE5 faceplate on ebay and you should be able to get a replacement for a couple of £. If it's the same with a replacement one then it must be the wiring.

sounds like a fault with the extension or extension wiring.

I assume your using the same phone to test in both locations
