Supply and fit 9 fence posts and gravel boards

I got a quote to supply and fit 9 concrete fence posts (I think 8ft or 10ft, as will be using 6ft panels - plus 1ft gravel boards). Currenlty an old wooden fence there and all the wooden posts are borken or falling over. I was quote £1000 to supply and fit 9 x concrete posts, and supply the gravel boards. No fence panels and not remove the old fence etc
How does that sound, I'm in Hertfordshire. I thought it a bit much?

Posts = £8 x 9 = £72
Panels = £45 x 8 = £360
Post Crete = £5 x 8 =£40
Say £500 including sundries. So £500 labour does seem steep. That should take 2 people half a day tops.
On the steep side I think.
It is really easy to do yourself mind.
Sorry I just read that it does not include the panels, or removal...
In that case it is EXTORTIONATE!!!0 -
It does, £100 / person / day. Though it depends were you are.
It will take about an hour per post but that includes 1/2 hour setting time in which they can be starting the next one. All in a it would take a day max.
1/2 bag of quick set postcrete per post = 5 bags at mostDo you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0 -

I`m glad you don't do my estimating.
The OP is talking about concrete H posts and 300mm gravel boards , you reckon £ 8 per post, in your dreams ,you can double it at least and you quite probably have to pay delivery on top of that. As for doing it yourself, have you ever fitted a 300 mm concrete gravel board by yourself , well I have but I bet you a pound to a penny you haven't and cant , never mind a 9ft concrete post.
Assuming these people have got to take the old fence down , hand dig the holes , ( unless they've got a mini digger with 8" auger on it, which is highly unlikely and even if they have, it doesn't come for free anyway) set the posts and 5 bags of post crete wont be enough by a long way , level up gravel boards , good days work for 2 fellas and I wouldn't be arguing about the estimate.0 -

I agree, to say it's an easy half day for 2 blokes is highly ambitious, and if done would likely be chucked up without care for decent level.
That said, blindly estimating I'd be looking at closer to £700, allowing for 2 guys supplying 9 posts, gravel boards and crete (this also in herts) .
That's blind though , I can see how site restrictions may see someone going in higher, OP says not removing old fence, do you mean you're doing that or there's no fence currently?0 -
Depending on the ground that's being dug out too. If its really easy it needs to be deeper with lots more concrete . A bag of post crete per hole is daft . 2 men 2 days to do a decent job £20 a post and £20 a gravel board £10 worth of concrete . Not an easy job:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Calm down Cariad Mawr, you'll do yourself an injury.
I miss read the post, and did not see the concrete post reference.
You are right, I have never fitted one, but I would gladly take you up on your bet...0 -
If they are not removing the old one and they have been concreted in good luck with that one too.. unless to plan to straddle the !!!!!!s .:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Hi, i agree with you i put 4 posts with my Dad help this was in the 80s when i was fit.
That was hard work, they were still up 20 years later.
Just repair and paint every year or two.0 -
Hi all
Had another guy round today (a fencing company, first quote was a builder who builds houses) and he says it will take 2 guys a full day to do it. Awaiting a quote so will update you as soon as i hear back, i worked out about £300 for materials (without fence panels) so the first quote at £1000 seemed a lot for 2 guys for a day with only £300 of materials0 -
Me again
Right I've had my 2nd quote in and its £1150 with 8 decorative panels (@approx £50 each), which means the cost compared to the first quote of £1000 is £750 and thats with a proper fencing company, who said it will take 2 guys a long day to complete...
Hows that sound?0
