We have just moved and at last home paid £24 a month dd to powergen, our new home is similar in size ((1 extra bedroom( used as office)) but has just had an extension so 1/2 of it comes up to new building regs ie; 11" insulation not 4" and all external walls have insulation in.
we have just had gas bill for dec to march and it is £254 , gas board tell me to expect 2 at this sort of price and 2 at about 1/2 so my annual total will be around £760, my previous was £24 * 12 total for year £288 something aint right,
what do i do, i dont want to get a bill from last house but this one seems high. we are a family of 3 , 3 bed bung , new combi boiler and rads insulated very well, cook on dual fuel .
any suggestions as to what my consumption should be please

£24 per month does seem rather low. I've just phoned Powergen to up my DD (I've only just changed to them), as they had set it at £27. I was told this was a sort of default figure as they had no records of my previous consumption.
My gas bills for a Victorian semi (GCH and cooker) have been about £800 pa - not very well insulated and huge areas of single-glazed windows (everything is non-standard and would cost a fortune to replace with bespoke windows!)

have since spoken to a really nice lady at powergen, she has asked a few questions such as size of prop and what gas is used on and suggests £27 to £30 a month, which goes back to the british gas bill of £254 for 103 days useage. powergen said this seemed a lot as they would expect my annual bill to be around £300
where do i go with BG now as they say the meter is running correct

Without being facetious if a nice lady at another supply company said £20 a month, would you go to them?

What you pay on Direct Debit is meaningless; it is the quantity of gas you use that matters. You could pay £10 a month and build up a huge debit, or £100 a month and build up a huge credit.

If you really have used “£254 for 103 days useage” with BG then you might get it down by a good few pounds(10% or so?) by going to another supplier; but to suggest that you should have an annual bill of £300 is ludicrous.

£254 for three and a half months over the coldest part of the year for a 3 bedroomed bungalow is high – but not excessively so.

I assume you have checked the meter readings when you moved in and for the first bill and ascertained that the bill is correct?

OP, give us your gas meter readings and we'll try and work it out for you.

In the meantime my gas bill for 3 bed mid terrace, CH only and one bedroom unused was £105 last year. Gas *plus* electric works out as just under £28 per month. Yes I do cook and have computer + tv on a lot.

Some of your (other posters) gas bills seem very very high as I cannot concieve of bills over £400.

thanks for comments , as i said in my original post we have moved from like to like albeit the new prop is much better insulated and has a new heating system , so no sludge in rads , pipes not furred up etc, the nice lady at powergen was in fact my original company to which i paid £24 so to suggest £27 to £30 now was not to outragous, it still seems the bill for £254 is high and with BG quoting me 2 bills at high rate ie: £254 and 2 bills low about half the winter i have just multiplied the £254 by 3 , so £760 for the year seems a lot.
