Assigning a savings bond

Help - in a pickle

My mom was sure she had found the ideal place to spend her days, she is 83. She had sold her old house, rented a little bungalow and put most of the cash in a 5 year savings bond - secure in the knowledge that she would be happy with the interest and have enough to live off in her other account. Now an opportunity has arisen that she would like to take, but the savings bond with First Save states there is no cancellation unless death or maturity. She can't be the first to have found her self in this position, so is there a way to assign the savings bond to the charity she want's to part buy a flat off? Thereby freeing herself from the savings limit?
Any help...please?
