New Bed & Mattress - where to buy?

Hi all!

lurker from DFW boards.

So we need a new double bed, we've had our old one (£200 divan from argos) for nearly 7 years now, and it has had it. the bottom corners are propped up with the wood from the broken drawers and the mattress stabs you from every corner through the gaffer tape.

We took a walk to dreams, because we have no idea about numbers for mattresses (5 apparently!)..and came out with a quote for over £1k for a divan bed, with 2 drawers, headboard and basic mattress..is this normal? Ive only every purchased one other bed above) before, where did you get yours? any ideas / offers / brands who are better priced??

  • We have a hypnos back care 6 hideaway as we needed the storage for a double they are circa £900 (that said we bought a zip linked super king which was a lot more than this plus matching headboard) we went to local furnishers as don't like the chains and wanted personal service and they are often open to negotiation or have bank holiday deals..

Hypnos have a 10 year limited guarantee which is also good.

Hideaway is a higher bed than standard divan so Google it

Well I bought mine from them, not cheap approx £1800 but have never regretted it.

Brand is more important than where you buy it. Lots of high end hotels and cruise ships use Sealy mattresses and we have never been disappointed with their quality, but quality does cost.

beds are easy, mattresses not to easy. they are so dependant on personal choice e.g. how much support u want, do you get very warm in bed etc. when we got out first hosue we were absolutely fed up with a very average double mattress give by landlord in our old home. so we shelled out i think about £600 for a pocket spring + memory foam mattress bought from a bed specialist in london. they really knew what they were doing so got good advise (thought delivery was an absolutely nightmare with torn mattresses!, missing mattress etc). anyway we are happy with mattress. for the guest room we got a £300 pocket sprugh+latex mattress from argos. and now i prefer the cheaper one!

go and try few mattresses. complete memory foam is good but can get a bit warm in night. if u like these they can be bought over internet to save some money.

pocket sprung (though not more than 1000/1200 springs for double mattress) with thick layer of memory foam or latex are probably what many people have now. these will work fine with divan bed u r looking for (with slated base pocket sprung doesnt always work well as the smaller springs can slightly fall in the gap betwen slats unless you add extra slats!). so to summarise go to dreams/johnlewis/furniture village/M&S/independents shops and try them out!

£200 is exceptionally cheap - well done for making it last as long as it did!

For a double divan set, you can pay anything up to about £3k at high street shops and more if you really try. But you'll get a reasonable quality one for £600-1,000.

Dreams don't stock many of the cheaper options. For example, we're currently looking at getting a Hypnos mattress. Hypnos do a 'budget' line that are about £600-900, then all their others are £2-3k. Dreams only stock one of the budget ones and probably don't have it in all their showrooms.

If you're in East Anglia, go to a MattressMan:
    http://www.mattressman.co.uk/storelocator.aspx

Their showrooms have many more of the cheaper lines than Dreams. We've had several mattresses from them and their customer service is good. Just avoid the British Bed Company brand - that's their own make.

Hypnos and Sealy are both good makes and used by a lot of hotels. Silentnight are lower end but still pretty reliable - I've had their mattresses over the years.

I can't remember what Dreams' own make is but avoid that too - we paid £1,300 for a mattress by that make and it only lasted four years. They came bottom of the 2014 Which mattress brand rankings.

Would you consider a wooden framed bed ? We bought ours from Riverwood beds about a year ago & I can honestly say it's been fantastic. You'll have to buy a mattress separately. You do have to put it together yourself, but even my DIY phobic hubby had no issues at all

Although it isn't the cheapest in the world, it's really very very sturdy & I can easily imagine that it will not need replacing for a long time to come, if at all

We bought a superking Braemar in Walnut & asked for a few customisations, which they did without charge. Brilliant company, can't fault them

I think i spent about £500 on my current double,
the only advise i would give is don't worry to much about divan / frame etc as the can be changed easily. Spend your money on a good mattress and you'll be thankful you did.
My personal preference is the pocket sprung ones with memory foam on top

    Thank you everyone!!

we know the mattress we want, as we tried it in store, but the 'package' deal just seemed a little pricey!

am thinking of maybe replacing the divan with something cheaper, then saving for the mattress. I prefer a divan, mainly for the storage (and I cant see the dust underneath).

will check out all the links provided thanks!

I've only got good things to say about Dreams - £900 for the Kingsbury bed frame and 'firm' mattress. Delivery was 10 days and the drivers were brilliant at getting the Superking mattress in through the door and up the stairs. We paid for them to remove our old divan and mattress too.

We looked at Furniture Village and the quality was no different but prices were much higher.
