So can a local computer 'look' at an incoming email, decide that it has too many recipients and then decide it is spam?
If so is this a feature of the email client being used, local anti-virus software or could it be instituted by the recipient's ISP (in which case the recipient may not see it in their spam/junk folder)?

Yes, but how local rules and settings are actually set up can vary so much according to the AV software or filter rules on the end users PC so it could be a function of any of the above...

Also good manners to use BCC rather than CC as you're broadcasting everyone's (possibly private) email address to lots of people.
I do use that method for one group but in the case of all the other groups everyone knows each other and communicate via email on a regular basis.
I don't think that I have had the problem of non delivery with the group I use BCC with, so that is definitely a route to investigate.

BCC didn't solve the problem. Tried sending an email (using BCC) to 8 addresses using my plusnet email address and only 2 emails were received. I repeated using an outlook.com address and all were received. Both were sent using Windows live mail. Any ideas?

Then I think you're back to the recipients' email thinking yours is spam, and for some reason their filters are more sensitive to the Plusnet address than to Outlook.com. So your options would be to use Outlook.com for this group or carry on using Plusnet and split the list into several smaller ones - you'd probably have to experiment to find the size where everybody receives the emails.

Or use a white listed email newsletter service like constantcontact. Much lower 'spam' rates than personal email accounts as they have proper opt-outs and white list agreements.

Use mailchimp.com ... Perfect for group emails. You can setup multiple lists / sub lists and all emails are sent individually so they don't get caught in spam filters.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I noticed the word plusnet ....

I sent a wedding rsvp in March from my own domain address (1&1 hosted) using my plusnet internet to the brides hotmail

Had a call on 'deadline day' saying we hadn't replied!
Re-sent the message but she still didn't get it!
    Sent from
    1. my 1&1
    2 my plusnet
    3 my onetel
    4 my gmail
    5 my hotmail

She only received three - no sign of the other two ... no bounce, not in her spam.
    Most odd

Not the first time this has happened! :(

I get email issues sometimes (but not always) with a combination of PlusNet and 1&1 so maybe there is a connection?

Sending an email from my work email address using the PlusNet servers doesn't seem to get through to my employer (I work from home so email the office quite a lot). If I email from my personal email address (our domain registered and hosted by 1&1) the emails get through ok.

On the other side emails sent by my employer to my personal email are often delayed by several hours (sent through TalkTalk ISP and received by 1&1 mail) but if I am copied using my work email address they come through immediately (I have to log in to the work email servers to get them).

The delays and non-deliveries are becoming a real issue and nobody seems to accept responsibility - everyone blames everybody else and I don't understand enough to know who is fobbing me off.

Interesting that PlusNet and 1&1 is causing issues for others - have been considering moving from 1&1 but not sure that would solve my problems.
