Letters from Sigma Red to wrong address

Options
Hi all,

Apologies if I've posted this in the incorrect place, but just wanted a little advice before I proceed with replying to some letters I've received from Sigma Red (I keep having to correct myself from writing Simply Red!).

Basically, in August I moved out of a flat shared with my former partner, things got quite messy, but as far as we were aware everything was paid off.

I'm now living somewhere else, but went back to visit my parents last week to find letters from Sigma Red, claiming that I owed money for an unpaid energy bill to Scottish Power. They'd also sent me a letter offering a settlement of a lower payment for the bill, but it had gone past the date they had given for accepting their offer.

When we moved out of the original flat, we gave my ex-partner's mother's address (who she went to live with) to our former landlord as a forwarding address, so as to make sure we were aware of anything we had left to pay, so obviously I was quite surprised to find these letters at my parents' house.

I am more than happy to pay if I am liable, as I would have done if I was aware of the debt, I am just concerned as to how the circumstances by which I haven't paid might affect my credit rating, & what the best way to proceed from here would be.

My immediate instinct was to just call Sigma Red & explain the situation, but I'm conscious that I might be lumped with a bunch of "admin fees" & such.

Any advice would be much appreciated!
