Slow Cooker for 2

Options
I'm thinking of getting a slow cooker, as there are so many lovely looking recipes here at MSE, that I'm dying to try them all.

The cost of it isn't really an issue, as we've got left over wedding voucheers for Debenahams.

I've had a mooch about here, and read a lot of good things said about the Morphy Richards 6.5 Liter Slow cooker. (£35 or £45 - i can't remember)

The alternative, is a Purple (smaller) Kenwood Curry Cooker (£20 or £30).

Whilst I'm not concerned about the space the M R would take up, I'm worried that it will be too big to cook for just 2.

1)Would it?

I know some will advise cooking twice as much, and freezing left overs

2) Can this be done with any meal (stew, curry, hot pot etc)
3) Will cooking for 4 (so I can freeze half) be enough for it?

Finally, has anyone used the kenwood (and is it just for curries, or is it a slow cooker too)? (it's link is here: http://www.kenwoodworld.com/uk/product_detail.php?id=604 )

All advice on this would be really appreciated, as I'm only just getting into cooking! :)

As someone with a huge SC and only two people eating I'd say go for a smaller one unless you're convinced that you'll cook stuff that will freeze. You need to at least half fill a SC and believe me 3l of food is a LOT. And boy do you get tired of it by the third day :)
  • i would say go for a a smaller one unless your plan is to make larger meals and then freeze them. I love my slow cooker btw and would recommend getting one and you don't need a big named brand the cheaper ones work just as well.

1)Would it? no would be fine but you may find the edges will burn and you wont need the heat as high

    3) Will cooking for 4 (so I can freeze half) be enough for it? not quite sure what you mean ( but i have just got back from my holiday after a 45 hour journey with not much sleep so it could just be me lol) yes i would just cook double what you need??

Iv got my eye on the 3.5 morphet Richards in the above link. Does Debs not have one like this instore? 6 litres is an awful lot. It would be a pain if you got 6l of a meal you didnt like.

Ps. im a SC Virgin, this website has got my taste buds drooling for one though

I think the idea would be to half fill it the first time you try a recipe, and if you like it do the full 6l next time.

We have a 3 or 3.5 litre cooker and regularly cook meals for 2, although it will do stuff for 4 easily. Would recommend this size.

Thanks for the replies everyone, looks like I'll go for a 3 / 3.5 Litre one then (I can always upgrade in the future).

Does anyone know if the Kenwood Curry Cookers are the same as slow cookers, as IIRC, that's the only smaller slow cooker our local debenhams has?

My 6.5 litre one is good for bulk cooking, you are usually recommended to fill it 2/3 full at least for best results, for example with bolognaise this full I can get about 8 portions out of at 2/3 full, more if I fill it. If you're only making for 4 I would say a 3l one should be enough IMO.
One day I might be more organised...........

Thank you so much for that!

I never mentioned earlier, but I love curries, and after having a look at that, I'm sold on the idea, and am going to go and buy one tomorrow!

    My mouth's watering already :j
