Travel insurance pre medical condition.

Hello Everyone!

I apologize if this is in the wrong place but I'm looking for some advice.

Last year I was diagnosed with Rentinal Detachment in both eyes after a trip to the opticians made me realize I could not see properly out of my right eye, I had a large black spot in my vision and could not read the chart, my optician referred me to the hospital the next day and I had 4 tears in the back of my eye and a very large Rential detachment.

A week later a had Scleral buckle and Vitrectomy surgery which meant I regained my vision but it is not brilliant, a week later I was told I had to undergo the same procedure in my left eye and my surgeon was very surprised it had happened to me in both eyes as at the age on 25 it is not very common.

It's now 6 months later and my eyes are doing really well, I saw my consultant yesterday and everything is really good, I'm not showing any signs of cataracts either which is a common side effect of the Scleral Buckle surgery and I don't have to see him again till January 2016! :) :T

I am going to America in June to stay with my partner, I am going for 27 nights and I am currently looking for travel insurance, I spoke to my consultant yesterday and he recommends that I mention it to my insurance company just in case there are any complications, I've been looking at comparison websites and included "retinal detachment" in the pre medical conditions part and I have noticed the insurance companies prices vary greatly, the cheapest is with a company called "Just Travel Cover. com" to various other companies which I haven't heard before and the prices go up a lot too.

I just wanred to ask if anyone has any experience on mentioning retinal detachment on travel insurance or can anyone recommend any good companies that would cover this condition without being really expensive?

Thank you.

I do not have any experience of retinal detachment, but our pre existing conditions come up at a competitive price with L&V, not the cheapest but a good reliable company when it comes to paying out.
might be worth getting an online quote

I always use Explorer who are s specialist medical travel insurance provider. Three members of my family have complex medical issues and they have been very competitive.

  • I can't comment on the companies mentioned as I never have used them - but I would urge the OP to disclose all details about all pre - conditions and go for quality of cover if he is going to USA.

My other half, at the last count, after cataract ops, detached retina etc etc has had 13 ops on his eyes.

We finally came up with something that most insurance companies have on their lists 'Ocular Disfunction' it covers a multitude of conditions.
Can you see okay now, My children had catacract ops in their mid 20s, straight down the husbands family line, damn them....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
