How close to the end of a fixed term can i switch without penalty?

This should read how EARLY can I switch - sorry!
I am sure that in one of the MSE newsletters I got there was a comment about most of us not knowing that we could switch energy suppliers BEFORE the end of the fixed term without having to pay a penalty, but I can't find this fact listed anywhere on the MSE website. Can anyone help with this please? I am fixed with BG until 31 May 2015. Thanks.

42 days before. If you receive the note from your supplier 49 days before then you can do so then.0

Verify this with BG, but OFGEM's current regulations say that suppliers should inform you 42-49 days before the end of your tariff, that it is about to end, and you should then be able to switch away without penalty.
I am with OVO, on a tariff that ends in May and has an early termination charge, and back in March received an email from them saying one if my options was "Move to another supplier (you won’t have to pay any fees)."
I have done that, so am not expecting any extra charge from them.
