HELP ?!?! Whats going on ??

A couple of months ago a neighbour knocked on my door telling me that some guy had rung her, said he was an old school friend of my ex bf, couple of weeks after that I had a letter arrive at MY house which was addressed to my ex boyfriend. It was sent back "not known at this address" as he did not live with me and never had. A couple of weeks later another letter turned up for the same guy, before returning to sender again, I looked up the address on the back of the envelope and found it was a company called McKenzie Hall.
Have not had any further correspondance from them but yesterday, some 2 months later some guy turns up at my house asking for this guy that I used to see, saying he had a very important letter to give him. He told me that the occupants of his last known address had given my address, this I know is untrue as his last house was repossessed last year. He also told me that this guy was on the electorol roll register as living at my address, something else I know to be untrue, he then basically made a threat that I myself would be in very serious trouble if I did not give him details that I simply do not know.
Who could this guy be and why is he knocking on my door ??

Mackensie Hall are really dodgy debt collectors. Have a look on the national debtline's website at their harrasement fact sheets. There are sample letters on there, I suggest you write to them very quickly (recorded delivery) and set them straight. Make sure you mention harrassement in your letter and that you are happy to take it further if it persists.

    Good luck :)

McKenzie Hall appear to specialise in statute barred debts. They will try anything to get some money of anyone who'll pay them!!

If some guy came to my door threatening all sorts of stuff, he'd know pretty sharpish not to return (can't say what I'd do on these forums).

Why am I no longer surprised at the depths to which MacKenzie Hall will stoop, when trying to pursue their despicable calling.
This guy was, most definitely, out of order - the debts of your ex are nothing to do with you, and this 'thug' should not threaten, or intimidate, you in any way.
Once you had told him that the person that he was looking for did NOT live at your address, then he should have left IMMEDIATELY.
You would be perfectly within your rights to report this 'pondlife' to the Trading Standards Office, as he was acting in complete disregard to the OFT guidelines on debt collection, to which he should ahere.
If a threat was made, then you could also report it to the police.

MacKenzie Hall seem to think that they are above the law - they need a taste of their own medicine.

  • I've had a look on the website posted by jo1972 and have called their helpline. If I send this letter to report the intimidation of this guy, should I expect a response from them.
Would I be better going through an official body rather than writing to them direct ?

Much better off BB. Mackenzie Hall will, probably, not even look at your letter, yet they can not ignore the Trading Standards Office.
These reprobates are based in Kilmarnock, and it would be best if you addressed any complaint to:
    TRADING STANDARDS SERVICE
    14 London Road
    KILMARNOCK

Rog is right, everytime I write to debt collectors they have ignored me until I've repeated my request with a copy of the original letter that I sent stating that I WILL take further action if they continue to ignore me and send harrassing letters. Just go straight to the top on this one. Good luck and keep us updated with what happens.

  • Kilmarnock ? I can't remember if the letter return address was in Kilmarnock but I do remember that the number given to my neighbour was a london number.
As the guy who called at my house didn't actually say where he was from, should I just assume that all 3 incidences come from the same source ?

I would assume they are all the same place :) the Trading Standards address is in Kilmarnok - not Mac Hall's :)
If he turns up again then ask him for ID - write his details down - hand it back and then tell him to go away - Mr X doesn't live here and never has. You do not know where he resides now as you do not have contact. If he or his company tries to contact you or anyone near or dear to you then you WILL report him to trading standards. If this doesn't get him moving immediately - simply say "wait here a second" go in and call the police. I'll bet you this scum will never darken your doorstep again... :)
