Post of the advert text just in case someone else decides this is too much of a bargain to pass up on and thinks they have found an amazing deal.

The price needs to be 30-40% less if it has no history and you do ALL the checks, no history and no V5 and the price needs to be discounted by 90%.

OK, thank you everyone for your advice, and for being so helpful.

(Except warwicktiger, who was just unnecessarily rude)

I've only ever bought a car before, from a friend who had a dealership and so didn't really understand the purpose of the VC5 other than registering ownership.

I assume log book loans, are loans taken against the car and they they they take the log book! I didn't even know what a log book loan was!

VERY glad I asked here first! Thank you all! :)

I still say the dealer should risk £25 ish and get an extra name on the log book , otherwise its a pig in a poke

If its still fairly new then could you find out who originally sold it, (numberplate/stickers etc) you may well find the original purchaser used this garage for the servicing and the dealer has a record on computer of service history that they will print off for you.

As has been said though, no V5, at that kind of money I wouldn't even consider it.

a amte bought a car without a logbook and had a repo company turn up 2 months later to take the car, long story cut short he had to pay them £800 or they took the car, he even called the police but nothing they could do! it may or may not have a loan against it....£10,000! are you willing to take the punt!

the fact that you have come on here and asked proves you are not stupid and that you have an element of doubt!

Bit strong isn't it, the OP was only asking for advice, not to be insulted
    Perhaps the insults are free?

M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
    A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
    A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'
    A: Yes it is!
    M: No it isn't!.

Pay a deposit, then wait till the seller has the V5....if they are traders they can register you as the new KEEPER, HPi it, join the RAC/AA and get them to check it, do a "VED" check with DVLA online, you can get the VIN off the car, with many makes now there is a free online VIN checker

If it has an MOT and you have the reg you are halfway there

if its 2 years old and has an MOT its been a taxi...
