Ikea Kitchen 1 year out of warranty and falling apart

Hi everyone

Long time lurker here, first time posting. I hope someone can help. My parents have an ikea kitchen. it is 11 years old (1 year out of warranty) the facings of all the doors are peeling off and it looks horrendous. It is only 1 year out of warranty and Ikea are refusing to offer any assistance or good will gesture. This was not a cheap kitchen either. I would expect a kitchen costing thousands of pounds not to fall apart 1 year after the warranty expires.

any advice will be greatly received.

It might have been expensive, but it's not an expensive kitchen by kitchen price standards.

I'm not sure I'd expect an Ikea kitchen to last much longer than 10 years. Clearly Ikea don't either. Over 10% out of warranty is definitely out of warranty.

I mean you can look at 'fit for purpose' and consumer rights, but It really does depend on how long people would expect things to last. If an average kitchen full of Ikea units lasts 10 years, then the cost is probably less than £200 a year.

If it's just the doors, then use the link for replacement Faktum doors and buy some new ones. It's not that expensive.

Ikea get a very good name My kitchen is about 15yrs old and as good as new, but we can't expect things to last forever no matter what we pay. I know you keep saying it's only a year out of warranty, but in reality it's 11yrs old. And if you tried to put pressure on Ikea i think they'd come back and suggest you hadn't been as careful as you should of.

so are you saying it has basically fallen apart in last one year alone? did you approach them about the poor condition before 10 year warranty? if you did, you can maybe write to them on the basis they ignored your complaint at the time but otherwise as others said 11 years for ikea kitchen is not too short ...

Well given their kitchens have a 25 year guarantee now, Including the factum range up until it was discontinued last year I would say it is entirely reasonable to expect them to last this long.

And yes it is only in the past year it has started falling to bits, the laminated coating on the doors is peeling away from the base.

It is not an average sized kitchen, that is the problem. If it was I would just have gone and bought new doors, but It would cost thousands. As for the smart arsed buy cheap buy twice comments. some of us don't have the kind of money to fit out a kitchen that size in in expensive kit.

The warranty is up so as blunt as this sounds it is simply a case of tough luck I'm afraid.

The options are buy a completely new kitchen or do a revamp leaving the old carcases in place which will be a bit cheaper.

I think claiming not reasonable quality if it's lasted 10 years is it a bit of a stretch, I don't think you'll get anywhere to be honest.

What about some second hand doors? Find some solid wood doors and paint / strip / stain them yourself and save a bit of money.

I would imagine that a lot has changed in their product in the last 11 years - although could you honestly say you have stayed within the requirements of the guarantee?

What is not covered under this guarantee?
This guarantee does not apply to products that have been stored or assembled
incorrectly, used inappropriately, abused, misused, altered or cleaned using incorrect
cleaning methods or cleaning products (see “Care instructions”). This guarantee does
not cover normal wear and tear, cuts or scratches, or damage caused by impacts or
accidents. The guarantee does not apply if the product has been placed outdoors or
in a humid environment or if the product has been used for non-domestic purposes
    (unless otherwise stated).
This guarantee does not cover consequential or incidental damage suffered by any
    person.
Cabinet frames, fronts, shelves and drawers
At IKEA we recommend using a soft cloth dampened with water or a mild cleaner,
if necessary, for cleaning your cabinet frames, fronts, shelves and other wooden
surfaces. Use only cleaning agents that are intended for the materials used in your
purchased kitchen. Avoid any agents that contain ammonia, alcohol, bleach or an
abrasive. Rinse with clean water, then dry with a clean, dry cloth. If you happen to spill
anything on a surface, do not allow the liquid to stay in contact with the surface, wipe
it off immediately. Don’t forget to wipe under the base cabinets and the edges of the
    cabinet doors.
Don’t place appliances that create steam (e.g. a coffee maker or electric kettle)
underneath the cabinets so that the steam flows up against the underside of the
cabinet frame and doors. Don’t open the door of the dishwasher immediately after the
programme has ended, as exposure to heat and the high humidity increases the risk
that the worktop or door may absorb moisture and swell.
Wood is a natural material and its colour may change with time. Light, lacquered
surfaces also have a certain tendency to “yellow with age,” depending on the extent of
    exposure to light.
What will IKEA do to correct the problem?
IKEA will examine the product and decide if it is covered under this guarantee.

Ikea's current 25 year guarantee is purely a 'headline grabber'. In my opinion its completely worthless! If you read the terms and conditions you will see it only covers faulty manufacturer of parts only. So completely rules out wear, which really is the only thing that can cause a kitchen component to fail after the initial first 5 years or so!
