How long for credit file to update

Options
A default was placed on my file on 6.4.09
I maintained the agreed monthly payment and finally paid of the final amount on 6.3.15 received by capital one on 7.3.15 but not processed by capital one until 17.3.15.
It is my understanding that the default marker should now come off my file but it is still on there despite 2 telephone calls to capital one asking when this will be cleared one telling me the default should disappear after the 6.4.15 and another saying it can take 4-6 weeks!
Can anyone tell me from their own experience how long it takes for the default to come off?
They are quick enough to whack it on but not as quick in removing it.
Thanks in advance

Have you got update copies of your credit reports?

The default should automatically drop off after the 6 year period.

Depends on the CRA you are checking with.

    - Experian/Creditexpert remove 6 years to the day.
    - Equifax can take a few weeks to drop.
    - Callcredit is 6 years to the day, unless you are checking via Noddle, in which case it will not be until your next monthly snapshot is generated.

Other 3rd party sites may lag significantly on their data. Always check direct with the CRA.

If still on Experian or Callcredit then complain to them. They are responsible for dropping the record, not the card company who reports.

Same with Equifax, bearing in mind that their systems are crap and leave stuff on for weeks.

  • Hi,

    Just my two penneth worth.

I would expect the default to drop sometime within 1 month of the date they processed the last payment.

Companies update the credit agencies once a month but on what date I dont know.

So i guess, Capital Ones update date may be the 16th, so your payment on the 17th would have missed it by a day. So yr payment may not be updated to the agencies until 16th of April.

If you're not in a hurry, wait until 2nd May then chase Capital One & the agencies like crazy. If they have messed up at least, (for example) you've got until 16th May to sort it in time for the next update.

It is the credit reference agency that drops defaults via their systems, at their end, and at the time they decide to do it.

It has nothing at all to do with when the creditor sends monthly updates.

If the default date is correct but it hasn't dropped off then that is the CRA's error, not the creditor's, and it's the CRA you should be complaining to.

I am looking at Equifax and it is still on there as at today

    Noodle was last update 04.03.15

I tried logging onto Experian but as I had been on the free trial with them before they wanted to charge me £14.99 so decided against it

As said, Equifax can take a few weeks to drop entries.

Experian do them to the exact day.

Noddle lags until you next get a monthly snapshot available, but the source CallCredit data should drop by the 6 year date, though you don't see that on Noddle.

Callcredit is just one of the CRAs, and they own Noddle. The Noddle report is a monthly free snapshot of the Callcredit report, if you see what I mean.

Equifax is separate, and so is Experian. Not connected to call credit.
