Aviva Car Insurance for new driver

Just passed my test. Naturally, I'm looking up insurance quotes. I'm under 25 and am looking at low litre, small cars, and have so far compared on Comparethemarket.com, Moneysupermarket.com and Aviva.co.uk. What's throwing me off is I'm averaging at around £800-£1000 for Aviva and several hundreds more on the other sites, same cars.

The Aviva ones are more in my price range but I'm looking for the catch. Why are they so significantly cheaper than other sites?

I'm doing it by annually on the cheapest options (i.e. third party only).

Insurers have different target markets at different times. In a few months time they might be the dearest.

Don't just assume TPO is cheapest.

Thanks. I guess what I'm asking is should I be worried, are Aviva well known / safe for me to go ahead and get car insurance with them? The prices seem (relatively) to good to be true compared to other sites.

    Just looking for some reassurance.

They are one of the biggest in the UK.

Have a look at Which and defaqto

Look at comprehensive cover with a big voluntary excess as you only pay the excess if you want to claim from the policy for your own damage which by the sounds of it you won't be doing.

Be aware that you may find that smaller engined cars especially those popular with young drivers and / or boy racers can often be more expensive than larger engineed unfashionable cars. The simple reason for this is if an insurer covers lots of young drivers who have Saxos they will get lots of claims registered against that type of car.

You may find something like a Volvo is cheaper

    I have internets :D

    Ok thanks guys.

(And man you were right about third party not being cheapest).

Can you elaborate on the excess? I'll generally try to fix the car myself as best I can and use insurance at last resort (i.e. when another user is involved and he won't take it private).

So your saying choosing an excess of £1000 instead of the typical I've seen @ £250 would be better suited for me?

Sometimed pushing the excess too high increases the premium.

After £500 it may start increasing rather than decreasing.

When my son became a learner last year Aviva were by far the cheapest insurer and when he passed his test it didn't change. I was sceptical at first as their quote was almost half the others. Luckily I didn't have to claim so don't know what they are like on that score. We have a multicar policy with them which brings it all down a bit.
