cat peeing in the hall

hi all,
I have an older cat who has taken to peeing on my 1 month old carpet, I have cleaned and cleaned it to no avail, having to resort to tonight cutting away the underlay and shampooing the carpet once again, have used bicarb of soda and it only made the smell worse.
How do I get this out of the carpet? I cannot get rid of the cat as he has been with me for almost 2 decades and is family, I am going to purchase a 2nd litter tray even tho he has never had an issue sharing until now.
I dont know the reason he does this, is neutered and has been since a kitten, gets out during the day and the litter tray is alway clean so dnt understand his reasons.
HELP!!

How old is your catThe mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

um - if you have had him 2 decades then he is a very old cat. could he be confused? Feline Dementia? Does he use the litter tray he already has, in a normal way? ie, does both pees and poos? or could he be getting 'caught short' on his way to litter tray? sorry for the barrage of questions - but there could be many reasons for him peeing in the hall. have you had the vet check his pee? and cat for signs of bladder or kidney problems?0

Biological washing powder to get the smell out.
It's probably his age. MIL's old cat took to pooing behind the sofa in the last year of his life despite having a cat flap and an indoor tray.0 -
If practical can you put the second litter tray in the hall?
This is good stuff for getting rid of smells

Has he had a vet check lately? Is he drinking ok?
When mine did this I temporarily put a plastic bin bag on the floor in that area (he doesn't like the feel of it on his feet). I also put a small bowl of biscuits there, to help break the thought that it was a toilet area.
White vinegar helped with the smell. Obviously to start with it all just smells of vinegar but it did help eventually!0 -
Could he be marking his territory? A new carpet will not have his scent on it and will be 'alien'.
You could try putting a well-used rug or even a blanket on the new carpet. Anything with his scent already on it.0 -
One of our (elderly) cats also sporadically does this, mainly on the doormat though, which is easier to deal with! Good idea with the 2nd litter tray - you could try putting it in the hall? Other things you could think about would be to try a litter that's softer on his paws (maybe paper based) as there's a chance he might be finding it uncomfortable/sharp. You could also try plugging in a 'feliway' diffuser there - he might be doing it because he's anxious about something (change, or maybe other cats in the area)? The post that said to try bio wash powder is also right, I find it pretty effective. Good luck as I know how potent cat wee can be!!0
